Thanks to those of you who have shared your stories and for Rip-off report! I just received a similar letter stating I owe on an unpaid past debt.
Like others I did not recognize the original creditor's name and my middle initial is listed incorrectly. Luckily my husband and I thought it was odd and I googled Midland Credit this morning.
Unfortunately I have already responded by leaving a message on a machine inquiring about the letter and left my home phone number...after reading others stories any future communication will be done by certified mail.
My only question is what happens if we simply ignore them? They are not valid claims, can they still show up on our credit report?

Tell them to validate by
. What the money you say I owe is for;
Explain and show me how you calculated what you say I owe;
Provide me with copies of any papers that show I agreed to pay what you say I owe;
Provide a verification or copy of any judgment if applicable;
Identify the original creditor;
Prove the Statute of Limitations has not expired on this account
Show me that you are licensed to collect in my state
Provide me with your license numbers and Registered Agent
NEVER SIGN THE LETTER AND ALWAYS PUT THE CERTIFICATE NUMBER ON THE LETTER ITSELF FOR PROOF
1. NEVER talk to a collection agency on the phone. Period.
2. Keep good records. This can be the difference between a good and bad settlement. Don't expect them to remember you or what you agreed upon.
3. Send all correspondence via registered mail, receipt requested and put the registered mail number ON THE LETTER.
4. Keep a copy of every letter you send.
5. Penalties and extra interest are typically fictious amounts of money added on by the collection agency to pad their profits. Sometimes as much as to 50% of the debt or more claimed to be owed by a collection agency consisting of interest and fees. This is illegal, every state has usery laws (which dictate the maximum interests allowed to be charged. That is except North Dakota. There are no such laws which is why most credit card companies incorporate there.) Junk debt buyer pay anywhere from 1 cent to 7 cents on the dollar, there is no way there is this much interest.
6. Time is on your side. As time passes, the creditors will likely stop calling and the debt will be filed away for future attention or until the SOL runs out ..
Bud Says...
Midland Credit Management is a scavenger debt buyer, bottom-feeder. They buy a lot of old debts that are (again) placed on consumer credit reports. MCM has BIG problem. Like most bottom-feeders, they must pay (usually $50.00) to retrieve documents on accounts the CLAIM are legitimate. So, like the others, it's easier and cheaper for them to ignore consumer complaints and NOT respond to your complaints.
Midland is a subsidary of Encore Capital Group, Inc.

Thank you for the quick response regarding the Midland Collection Scam, I've already written my letter to be sent the company!!
I have another question, they addressed the letter to me using my CORRECT first name, INCORRECT middle initial and my MAIDEN last name...
Should I correct them in my response letter or continue to let them think they got it right? Will it benefit me in future process by showing that they don't even have the correct information?
As far as I know they do NOT have my social and this is NOT an unpaid debt on my part. How do they obtain my address & name to begin with?
Thanks again for your timely advice.

Jennifer,
The ONLY way they can report this to your credit is if they have your SS#. Do they?
If it is not your debt, I don't see how they would have your SS#.
If they do report it somehow, you can sue them for damages.
The best thing to do is to send a DEBT VALIDATION request. Do not sign this letter. Send it by certified mail, return reciept requested. Be sure to put the certified# on the letter itself and keep a copy for your records. This is very important.
In this letter, clearly dispute the debt, and demand to see the original signed contract that created the debt as well as a full account history and itemization of charges.

It's my understanding, that if you dispute this debt, all collection activity must stop until they validate the debt.
If you just ignore them, they'll place this on your credit report.
read some of the posts on this site, and you'll get some good ideals on what to write.
never sign any letter you send them. do everything by mail (RRR), stay off the phone. no good will come of it. they will do everything they can to trick or fool you into making some type of payment and when and if they do send you some documentation and claim that this is validation. take a good look at it. they like to re-age debt, use there own in house reports, printouts.
