I WILL PROBABLY GET IN A WORLD OF TROUBLE FROM MY HUSBAND FOR DOING THIS. But as the nagging wife, and for the safety of others I ask you to heed my warning. In Mid Dec 2005 we purchased a little cheap Chevy Blazer. We chose Carmax as they advertise EVERYWHERE about their 125 point inspection and 100% complete satisfaction. (Go on their website I'm not lying) Anyway, my husband and I smelt antifreeze on the test drive (him being mechanically minded recognized that it must be the heater core) and we both assumed it had been replaced as part of the 125 inspection and the glaring Maryland Inspection pass paper still stook to the windshield.
The Sales associate as pleasant as he was must not have much of a sense of smell as he flat out stated "he didn't smell anything, and that when they sit for a while cars burn off any built up oil drips" - duh! and if he doesn't know the difference in smells between burnt oil and antifreeze he belongs in MacDonalds. Anyway sure as the grass is green we ended up having to take the Blazer back to the shop, where GUESS WHAT the heater core needed replacing upon looking closer they discovered a whole plethora of other things that needed to be done 125 inspection huh? What do they inspect? the interior?
SO we are put in a *Loaner* and decide upon a Jeep, Husband and I are well versed in Jeeps. We take the loaner back (obviously I'm sorry) So we take our Jeep we are very happy, until I get the call the the trannie seal has blown! OK now I'm mad. This is where the customer service turns into customer condescension from MANAGERS, questions such as "why do you buy such cheap cars? and what do you expect?"
All I can say is I SO glad I was not there as I would have made a fool out of everyone around me. I do not take too kindly to being talked down too when we are giving you our well earned money! Oh and by the way Mr. I ask insulting questions to my customers about the cars I sell. We both drive BMW's the cheaper car is for his daily commute, he drives all over gods green creation. One thing I will mention is that THEY try and SHOVE the warranty down your throat. We would have bought the warranty but it SERIOUSLY would have expired within a year. He tryly drives that much.
Here's the kicker today alone he has had to interupt his busy day as he could not drive any further. Not out of fatigue. But because the FIRST loaner the gas pedal kept sticking to ground, so Carmax in Laurel exchange it for another car, half way through the day he has to take THIS car back because the U joint is about to snap!! These were both LOANERS, taken off the lot, meaning they are ready to SELL these cars.
Also here in MD, maybe with other States a Police Officer can challenge your pass inspection certification, if it doesn't satisfy them, they can take your license!
Carmax has been fair in putting my husband in his now third loaner car of the DAY, but in actuality he is still in his warranty!!
Please people if you are NOT mechanically minded, bring someone with you who is. Carmax has very poor quality control, I think it is just because they cannot hire enough employees or keep up to date with the constant flow of new cars in and old cars out.
To ANYONE who has sold their car to carmax, did they inspect it before they GAVE YOU money? Just curious.

If you smelt(sp?)coolant on the test drive, you most surely should not have purchased that vehicle.
I've purchased now four vehicles at two different Carmax locations. While the service has definately degraded and now they blame high gas prices on just about all cutbacks, I cannot say I have ever been treated poorly by anyone I have dealt with. No one has ever "forced a warranty" on me or made me purchase anything I didn't want. I didn't even have a problem when I brought in a check from my bank and did not use their financiers of choice.
If your husband predicted that early that the Heater Core was bad, you and he are to blame for your troubles.

they screwed our credit

Well we have been through approx 5 "loaner cars" we are STILL in a loaner car, they screwed our credit because of all the times they had to "technically sell us this car" EACH time we had to receive a loaner. ANYWAY, Finally I go up to White Marsh with my husband as I had not been allowed to speak with anyone there before, due to bad temper....any way in my opinion CARMAX WILL TAKE YOU FOR A RIDE!! STAY AWAY!!
The outcome of this story is We are having the Jeep looked over by Jeep, paid for by CARMAX and ANYTHING that there is to be fixed, has to be fixed.
I think they are just ex note lot sellers in a uniform and mandated to shake your d**n hand each time you walk in the door, I mean EACH time within the same d**n visit.
I will keep you in the loop. STAY AWAY FROM CARMAX!!!!!!!!! I'm glad some people have great experiences. Just because I do not see why a rebuttal of "carmax was great" was needed. Oh well, whatever makes your clock tick!

His name is Mr. Harry Douglas and he has a syndicated talk radio show called "Car Concerns" operating out of Knoxville, TN and growing!
He was a former 30 year owner of several large car dealerships and such, and is now "repenting of his sins" exposing how they operate daily (from General Manager on down)and the tricks and manipulations that are done to your credit report even, and so forth, to discredit you further so Carmax and others like them can make more money on you saying your credit is lower than you think it is, etc... and force you to go through a subprime lender such as Americredit Financial- one of their major mainstays for dubious consumer car loans in my opinion.
it interesting to reach him as he is a "free" contributor to the Martindale-Hubbel Lawyer.Com internet legal research site for consumers as well as has several webpages to reach him directly by. I personally have been guest twice on his program to recant my experiences dealing to Carmax in Greenville, SC, and Carmax Corp's. legal Department in Virginia.

We had good luck with Carmax

I've been a bit of a car aficionado since I was in my teens. I've bought many cars from private owners, and I've dealt with both small-town Dodge and GMC dealers for new vehicles. But I would have to say hands-down, that Carmax was our best dealer-buying experience in all the vehicles that we have purchased.
They were totally unlike the average dealer. No sales pressure, no "would you buy this car today if I..." kind of nonsense. The actual buying experience was very nice and it was refreshing. We had looked at a Land Cruiser from a big-store Toyota dealer in Northern VA. Wow, what a bunch of vultures! I loved the land cruiser, but the sales people acted like if we didn't buy today, the world would come to an end. We were paying cash, and they guy asked us twice "so...how much would you like your monthly payment to be?". We smiled, thanked him and left.
Carmax had several land cruisers (a bit more expensive, actually)...but the experience was so non-pushy and nice, that we bought from them anyway. My son is in Iraq right now; and when he gets home that is definitely where we'll take him to get his vehicle.
Re: the trade-in value from Carmax. Don't expect more than average wholesale, and in many cases they will be $500 or more back of avg auction price. The appraiser seemed very nice also. We ended up selling our old vehicle ourselves, but the appraiser was very kind to us, and even offered a few selling suggestions.
I am sorry to hear that you had such a bad experience with Carmax - it is the first dealership that I have ever felt comfortable referring my friends and family to!
