I bought shell vacations club membership on 09-03-2007. But it is complete swindle. The total price for the membership is $30239.00 and $1150.10 annual maintenance fee (they call it assessment). What I got is 7000 points/year which equal 4 weeks vacation time including everything (airfare, food, car rental) that's the sales person told me.
I tried to book my first vacation on 09/15/2007. Their customer service told me the points can be only used for club properties, but it can be converted to purchase airfare something and the 7 points equal 1 dollar. That totally different than the sales representative told me. It's a absolutely a trick. I pay $30239.00 plus $1015.10 every year and then I got $1000(7000points) back per year. What a freaking scam!! I mean they are basically charging me $700 per night on a room that cost $150 if i go through the Hotel directly. Please do not buy from Shell Vacations Club if you are a owner Do not Buy more points, you will spend less money if you Just WALK IN into the Hotel and pay for your Vacations using your credit cards or cash money.
After figure out the whole store, I contacted shell vacation club to cancel this purchase at the same day (09/15/2007). But they don't allow me to cancel it.

Shell Vacations sales staff used questionable tactics and pressure tactics to try and sell an owner/time share. They talk of 5250 "points" as if they were dollars by subtracting the $679 management fee when in fact (their words) the points were convertible to $ at a 5 to 1 ratio that is 20 cents. Now my annual 5250 pts. $1050. Minus $679 management fee is worth $371 a year.
This for $23, 000 works out to 1.6%. If the value of the points stays at 20 cents and the maintenance does not rise. Who decides the value of the points? At 13 cents /point you earn 0%.
Put your money in a G.I.C. and go where you want when you want.
Shell Vacation is a SCAM! DO NOT BUY!!! The resorts are never available. All we've done is pay money, money, money but we have not yet reaped in its benefits. It's just like throwing our money out the window. Whenever we call, they never have any availability besides Mondays and Tuesdays. Who takes a vacation on Mondays or Tuesdays!?!
Whenever we try to book, they can never accommodate us, even if we have a list of dates. They do not understand how to provide satisfaction and great customer service. We have been owners for 3+ years and we've only been able to use it once. But the amount of money we've given them is unbelievable.
Do not buy shell vacations

I don't understand your math?!

I don't understand your math, here is how I calculate it:
7000 points should get you 4 weeks each year, room only. (of course, you know that it really depends WHERE you stay, and WHEN). BTW, we've never had problems booking, and typically are into the following use year because we use it so much.
But if we take your $150/night price, which is probably fair, and multiply that time 4 weeks:
$150 x 28 days = $4,200
Now we can take out maintenance fees:
$4,200 - 700 = $3,500
Then divide by the number of "points"
$3,500 / 7000 = $0.50 per point
Compare that to either your 5:1 or my experience of 4:1 of point value:
$0.50 > $0.25/point
So what I see is that the Shell points are LESS than the cost of simply paying cash to a hotel. Now this doesn't assume financing, which they have horrible rates, but have very easy qualifications. So PAY CASH.
Without finance charges, I think it will pay for itself in about 8 years:
8 years x 4 weeks x $150/day = 33,600
Or, let's say you're a young couple, like when we purchased our timeshare, and we're only going to use it for 20 years, which sounds conservative to me:
20 years x 4 weeks x $150/day = 84,000
So compare that with the theoretical price per hotel day with Shell over 20 years:
$30,000 (shell purchase) + $14,000 (maintenance) = 44,000
$44,000 (shell purchase) / 20 years / 4 weeks = $78/day
So it sounds like shell is ABOUT half the cost of a hotel, if you fully use your timeshare each year, for the next 20 years, and paid cash. Also let's assume that the maintenance fees are going to increase similar to the hotel rates increase. Even if the maintenance fees double between now and 20 years out, you'll still be in the green.
