As a fetish site, It was a reasonable expectation of users to be able to have discussion, debates and difference of opinion.
Instead there was a turf war between so called 'fetlife vets' and former members of Bondage.com who had gone there hoping for a better site. B.com users were either given the cold sholder, ignored or accused of 'flaming' for offering differences of opinion. This culminated in numerous debates, out right attacks between people, and the end result... the site wide ban of almost every user from B.com that had voiced an opinion about what was happening.
At last count, between 30-40 users had been banned and without any warning.
After the ban was issued, the following mass e-mail was sent out to those who were banned:
Dear User:
It has come to our attention that you have directly and on numerous occasions violated the terms of use and community guidelines of the site. We cannot allow this to continue. Therefore, your account is being suspended, effective immediately. This is part of an effort on our part to improve the user experience of FetLife.com for as many as possible, and continued violation of the rules does nothing but degrade that experience for all.
This is not a sudden decision, nor is it for a first offense. You have been watched for some time, and your behavior found wanting. We're sorry to have to delete users, but it is the only way to ensure that FetLife.com can continue to be the fun, community-based experience that it is meant to be.
We take banning users seriously and if you are found to come back onto FetLife we will contact your ISP, authorities in your area and work with our lawyers to do whatever it takes to protect the community.
Unless we tell you otherwise this is a life-time ban.
Sincerely,
JohnBaku and the FetLife Moderators
No warnings given to anyone. No real reason given to anyone and just the vague reference to being 'watched' and 'wanting' behavior.
This site has resorted to not only trying to silence an entire community, but alienating it as well.
Many of the people who were banned had also made monetary donations to the site that the owner, John Baku sought. These people not only lost a voice, they lost money also.
Join at your own risk, but think twice before giving them you money. They are Ban Happy and will do it for something as simple as not agreeing with the fetlife 'vet' posters.
A fetish site built on censorship can't last to long.

FetishSocial and FetLife not the first

Sorry, but both of these sites were proceeded by MyDungeonSpace. Created on: 06-Sep-06 It is also free to join and post unlimited blogs, videos, stories, images. It also has free video chat.
The facts are: the owners of both FetishSocial and FetLife joined MyDungeonSpace and spammed the blogs and forums with links to their sites in order to promote themselves. Poor form to say the least.
I've been a member of MyDungeonSpace since it opened and saw the spam myself.

I have been in Fetlife for over a year, and in the kinky community for well over thirty. I have from time to time joined many services catering to my style of life, and I can pinpoint advantages and disadvantages in all of them, including Collarme.com and Fetlife.com. I do not know the specifics of the quarrel, but one thing I assure you, I have seen John Baku and his team build a community for kinksters from scratch. He is, by myself and the community as a whole. one of 'us', and clearly identified as such. I do not know that Colarme.com holds the same status, I do not know who the owner of Collarme.com is, and do not know whether he is a kinkster or a corporate executive in the adult entertainment industry, He is not visible, public as John is. I in my opinion, and it is only my opinion, do not believe John Baku would ban anyone, much less for life, if he did not have strong reasons to do so, he does not make it his pastime to pick on users, on the contrary. I support Fetlife, and use Collarme, and if given a choice, I will side up with Fetlife. I am sorry for the people banned, but to my understanding they just made the wrong choice.

Fetlife and the Other Site Fetishsocial.com

Fetlif is not an original idea; there was a fetish community before fetlife. But was taking offline by the United States authorities for being too raunchy and distasteful . After a long court battle and settlement was reached freedom of speech and the site was put back online. The Site is Called http://www.FetishSocial.com , they are still rebuilding the network. But so far it looks good.
And the best part is there is NO! MODERATORS ON WWW.FETISHSOCIAL.COM
So no one is going to ban you for speaking your mind.. And the network is free just like www.fetlife.com but I have never seen fetishsocial.com trying to hit members up for donations. So if youre a disgruntled fetlife , user or you just want to have another profile in another fetish community so you can meet even more locals. Getting a profile on www.fetishsocial.com is the way to go. Here is a link to my profile on the site when you do join! Please send me a friends invite vote on my profile or leave me a comment... I reply to all my friend invites http://www.fetishsocial.com/myfetishslut and I do travel to meet friends , couples and groups.
Proof the www.fetishsocial.com was created first!

Know you know the truth! You can be ruled by some moderator on his terms or join a network that is truly free! And non-moderated.

I have inside knowledge of how their system works. For one thing, when you are banned a token is placed on your computer which is unlawful but he doesn't care he does it anyway. The fact that he is a Canadian citizen soliciting funds from United States Citizens is outrageous not to mention the fact of the abuse of some members which leads up to the difficulties causing certain members to be banned. Were it not for the fact that some members have a "green light" for abuse, none of these things would be happening and thats why I'm not there anymore because of his abusiveness.

John Baku and Fetlife are not trustworthy but a part of BDSM dispute
AUTHOR: Tiredkitten - (U.S.A.)
SUBMITTED: Saturday, April 25, 2009
When this site first opened there were hopes that finally we could have a company that rose above the abuse of other similar websites.
John I have news that I can prove no ifs and or buts about it.
They are allowing the words of a fake, an imposter, and a FAKE WAR HERO who lives in boulder, colorado to deceive and to steal the honor of soldiers who did fight and sometimes die for the U.S.
I have given them unequivocal truth that this person is using lies and false representations about, among other things.
This website (Fetlife) is turning into the same cut throat mentality that took down its sister sites.
this is endangering the safety of those who belong to Fetlife because they are given false information, lies and slander.
For Fetlife to not only stand by but to condone such behavior is unconscionalble.

I've recently experienced a similar situation as reported above with the FetLife website.
**Friday February the 20th**
I noticed that my account was closed without notice or explanation.
So I contacted they support address, caretakers@fetlife.com, they responded that they didn't know why or how my account was deleted.
Which is strange because accounts just don't delete themselves.
I had to open a temporary account to verify if someone had stolen my profile and was using my pictures.
**Friday February the 23rd**
I go back to the Fetlife website to another verification that my intellectual property was being used or if I wasn't victim of a scam and I'm greeted with the following message:
http://fetlife.com/banned.html
"Sorry to have to inform you but we might of banned from FetLife
If there is a mistake then please don't hesitate to email us and we will make sure to rectify the situation.
If we really did ban you then we do not recommend you try to create another account. We have saved every single bit of information we had on you and if you try to sign-up to FetLife again then we will have no choice but to contact your ISP, the authorities and anyone else we can think of that will make sure you can not come back to FetLife again. Protecting our members is of the outmost importance to us and we will go to great lengths to protect them even if that even means getting lawyers involved.
This is a permanent ban. Not a in 15 days you can come back and we will forget this ever happened. If you find a way to get to FetLife and not run into this screen it does not mean we don't mind you signing back up again. We do and we will come after you if you do sign-up again.
Can we work something out? Possibly, we are very forgiving. Email us and let's talk about it. But, we have to warn you, we are going to have to see a lot of effort on your side with respect to your willingness to change."
I contacted again they support and they not responding, I even tried to contact John Baku directly and still refuses to at least explain what happened.
This is a very strange situation and I'm starting to believe that my account was deleted by a member of they support group for personal or political reasons.
Because I was never involved in any verbal abuse or flaming, all debates I participated in where civil and I NEVER received any notifications or warning from anyone.
The only thing, is that I commented my times on the decay of the fetish scene, the abuse of cliques on the younger fetishes and I reported on abuses in the Montreal fetish scene.
All "political" charged subjects but all where my personal opinion and where writing in general terms.
Being from Montreal, I know how people in fetish scene are power hungry and willing to do anything to solidify they "position".
It's been over 24hours, if I don't get a valid responses, I will be obliged to notify all my contacts in the Montreal & international fetish scene of FetLife's abuse of it's users.
I will NOT let this go, I cannot stand by as a group is trying to monopolize the fetish scene.
Also note that I'm reviewing with my lawyer the "ban" message on they website, which seems to be abusive and threatening and which indicates that they gather information which they can use to contact your ISP and the authorities.
I believe this is illegal in Canada, and breaks certain ethic & privacy laws.
I will keept this rebuttal updated but this abuse will NOT go unnoticed and unreported.

I am a "vet" user of various similar services on the internet, Contrary to claims made here about censorship, I have found no such thing in FL, I have found them on other services however, who will let me post a blatant picture of my private parts, and not of myself eating a slice of pizza!. In my humble opinion, John has done an admirable service to the kinky community, with a totally free forum that has attracted many lifelong, serious people, to a place where we not only find likeminded individuals, but can exchange information, socialize, and yes argue, without a problem. Whatever issues are being raised by the people making them, I assume are personal, not otherwise. I express my support to Mr Baku's efforts, and give him a Hurray!

FetLife is a welcoming home

SUBMITTED: Wednesday, January 28, 2009
It doesn't matter who tells me, John and his site of moderators have made a welcome home for all us kinky folk that I am honored to be a major part of. Within a month of joining the site, I'd already volunteered and I actively donate to his cause each month. Yes, the site did go through a round of bannings, but they were well deserved, and the bans were only placed after careful deliberation. They weren't something taken lightly.
Now, I can't tell anyone what to believe, but FetLife is my home. They are a kind and wonderful group of people that has helped me get notice not only on the international stage, but in my local community as well. Each time I go to a munch, people recognize me and suddenly I'm bombarded with suggestions for the site. People care about it. Heck, whenever John changes the layout, there is an uproar.
So, while bans happen, they happen everywhere. It isn't like John or any of the admins goes around ban happy. What the people who did get banned did deserved banning and we are all grateful for it. I hope this site is around for many decades to come!

I am a happy member of Fetlife.com I have also been a member of B.com.
The fact is that fetlife.com Unlike B.com is a 100% FREE. As such it (fetlife.com) is under no obligation to provide you or me or anyone access. If he (john) wants he can deny you access or any reason at all. Access to fetlife.com is a Privilege not a Right!
I do not know all the particulars of your situation but I do know that you cannot be ripped off if you did not lose money or a right.
While I do not agree with all the decision that John make I do support his right to make them. This is his site His House if he asks you to leave then you simply say thanks for the Privilege of being here and goodbye
My guess is that this original post is from an owner or an agent of B.com. I have heard that B.com paid membership has fallen in the year that fetlife.com has come on this the scene.
But don't trust me or the original poster. Again the fact is that fetlife.com is 100% free so you can find out for yourself ( At no risk of ripoff) who is right!

Actually, most of what was reported is true.
AUTHOR: Early Adopter - (Canada)
SUBMITTED: Thursday, October 23, 2008
In total over 30 accounts were deleted, it's true that some of them were duplicate (sock puppet) accounts; but that totalled less than half. The rules on FetLife did not then, nor do they now prohibit uses from having more than one account.
There was at least one instance of a user that was banned without making a single post.
The best guess by users I respect, is something like 20+ unique users were initially banned.
It's also true that some of the banned users had donated money to FetLife. John Baku publicly said that any banned users who requested refunds would be given full refunds. I can't say whether-or-not any refunds were given; but I can report that it seems as though most of the banned users have returned.
As for it being a "spat" between older and newer users, I can't really speak to that.
My user number is considerably less than 50. I mention this because the banning was so totally out of character for John. I don't know what happened, if the fame went to his head, if a big advertiser waved an insane amount of money in his face or he just woke-up in what he thought was an alternate reality.
I continue to recommend the site and the community. It's fun and quite free again. The place is full of cool people and good, discussion, even on *very* controversial topics.
The ban-spasm was an anomoly.

The Above Report About FetLife Is NOT TRUE
AUTHOR: Therealtruth - (U.S.A.)
SUBMITTED: Monday, October 06, 2008
This report was made by a disgruntled person named Mistress Michelle who was banned from the site for her disruptive behavior... in the same manner she has been banned from MANY other sites.
There has not been mass banning as she reports. There have only been 3 or 4 and for good cause.
The TRUE facts that Michelle fails to report are not exactly that simple... cut and dry... nor the chain of events as told by Michelle.
She is leaving out:
1) The 6 sock puppet accounts she opened in as many hours after her first account was deleted for the sole purpose of acting in a disruptive manner.
2) The threats she made to John Baku and other FetLife users including myself.
3) The countless harassing emails she sent to anyone who dared to disagree with her.
4) Pretending to be other people with sock puppet accounts to play the "woe is me card" and to make negative comments about FetLife.
5) Countless violations of the FetLife Terms Of Use on a multitude of occasions.
6) Deleting a multitude of FetLife users posting contributions on her group if anyone dared to disagree with her or provide a different point of view.
Then after being warned repeatedly she continued her disruptive and unacceptable behavior.
After her first 3 accounts were simply deleted because she kept coming back and being a nuisance making the quality of the FetLife experience intolerable for other FetLife users... she left no choice for John Baku but to ban her ip.
Those are the FACTS as I know them my brother.

I have been a member of FetLife for several months. It is a good, free online community created by kinksters for kinksters, with no subscriptions, fees or other "catches," unlike some other online communities designed for the fetish community.
I have encountered only warm, friendly and professional correspondence from them and from other users of the site. I have seen one instance in which a user became problematic with semi-obscene language and an abusive tone, for which he then apologized, and said he would understand if FetLife decided to ban him, which they did not.
I am genuinely sorry that other people seem to have had a negative experience with FetLife, but I have to say that no online community is for everyone. If they did not find the users welcoming and friendly, and were given the cold shoulder, they were free to form their own interest groups within the site and try to make friends there. I don't see how it is the responsibility of the website to make users like each other.
Furthermore, FetLife has a right to run their site the way they want to, especially since it is done 100% free of charge with very little advertisement. I believe they have the right to ban any of their users for any reason, although I doubt this was done frivolously.
If any users are unhappy with FetLife, or have been banned from it, they have the right to create their own online community or join another one.
It would be a shame to have this service injured because not everyone who joined it was happy with it. I enjoy it and hope it will continue.
