I have my FitCity membership set up on a an automatic credit card payment like most members. In mid-February, I noticed on my credit card bill that they had not adjusted for the reduced tax change that began in 2008 and had overcharged me my membership fee. I brought it up to a staff member since I thought everyone probably got overcharged. She agreed with me that this needed to be addressed and said the manager would be in touch with me.

No one got in touch with me, (and the error was only for the month of January) so yesterday, I spoke to the manager, Sabrina Cohen at the club. I informed her of the error and she said it was no big deal; (she underestimated the amount of my refund, it was 35x what she said it was).

I asked her if she was going to let members know they were overcharged and she said no, like I was crazy to even suggest it. I said at least they should put up a notice on the changeroom bulletin board so members can be aware that the error had occurred and could ask for a refund if they wanted, she said no. I asked if she was going to do anything about this and she said no.

I asked if I could put up a notice on the community bulletin board to inform members and she said absolutely not. Basically, FitCity is taking money out of the pockets of their members. I know it's not a large amount individually, but collectively, for all the members across all the locations, that adds up to a lot of money in FitCity's pocket that rightfully belongs to the members. This is a class action lawsuit waiting to happen. I could not believe how she handled this.

I have made a complaint to the Better Business Bureau. I think the conduct of Ms. Cohen in not taking any steps to address this matter is egregious. By not doing anything about this, they are, in effect, stealing from their members.

Since I am precluded from advising members at the club, I thought I would post here so hopefully, some members could at least know what happened. In my opinion, whether it's 50 cents or $50, keeping money that doesn't belong to you is wrong. You can bet that if they accidentally undercharged members, even a small amount, they wouldn't be saying it's not a big deal!

Got me too

AUTHOR: Vendula - (Canada)

POSTED: Wednesday, January 12, 2011

Yes, they got me too! They wont let out of my 6 months even though medically I cannot find close enough parking. They are sneaky and not professional. Anyway the gym is not doing so well and I suspect it will end up closing soon. So there may be satisfaction in that alone.

Got ripped off too!

AUTHOR: Darcray - (Canada)

POSTED: Wednesday, August 04, 2010

At first I was very impressed with this gym, but be warned, their contracts are VERY sneaky. Getting out of one is very difficult (contrary to what the staff tells you) even after your contract term expires, like what happened to me, they still charged my account and said there was some fine print that allowed them to do so.

I have really bad endometriosis and I am seeking treatment at the moment, did they care? No. The fact that I cannot come to the gym because I am in crippling pain does not make my membership void- instead, I still had to apply for cancellation (for a contract that had already expired by the way) and because I did the cancellation at the beginning of the month and they require 30 days notice, I was still charged for the next month as well!

When I tried to explain my situation, that I can hardly travel around without being heavily dosed with pain medication, and that I hardly had enough money in my account (after buying my medication, and after my treatment) for my own food, let alone paying for a gym membership to a gym I was not physically able to go to , I got hung up on. NOT ONCE, but TWICE. I got hung up on and then when I called back, she immediately hung up on me after she realized I had called back. And this was the esteemed Manager, Amanda. So much for good customer service! When I called back the THIRD time she apologized and tried to write it off as a mistake. I am appalled at the treatment I received and do not think I deserved such disrespect since I am always calm and polite whenever dealing with people, even when they are very obviously ripping me off.

Got ripped off by Fitcity for Women too

AUTHOR: Kc - (Canada)

POSTED: Monday, February 23, 2009

Hello,

I'm glad to find someone else that has been scammed by Fitcity for Women too. My membership expired last year in December, but they still keep charging fees on my visa bill. I refused to pay, and now they send me a letter telling me that they are going to file this to a debt collector and a legal lawsuit. They also put additional comments on my contract that did not appear on my original contract. I'm trying to find victims of this company and deciding to file a lawsuit. Please let me know if youre interested. Thank you!
