On Friday, September 28th, 2007, I was driving home from having my 2006 Jeep Liberty Sport cleaned and detailed. Approximately 1.5 miles from my home, my engine light came on and the engine started running erratically. I made it to my home but felt that I should have my vehicle towed in because the engine was making a noise as well. I had my engine towed in to the Chrysler dealership where I had originally purchased it. They told me it would be Monday before they could get to it. I was called on Monday, October 1st and they told me that they removed my valve cover and found abnormal amounts of oil sludge which caused the engine to fail. Since my engine had 62,000 miles on it, my extended warranty would have to cover the cost to replace the engine. The service man called First Extended Service Corporation. The service man called me back and said that First Extended Service Corporation denied the claim because I had no receipts of having routine maintenance done on my vehicle ( I have been doing my own maintenance on all of my vehicles for almost 30 years!). The dealership fixed the 4 safety recalls but I refused to pay for a new engine...therefore they did not fix the engine. I contacted my attorney and have sent a letter to Chrysler and a letter to First Extended Service Corporation. I did a bit of research and found that a major problem exists with the Chrysler 3.7 liter engine having major oil sludge problems. I maintained my vehicle with products that exceeded the manufacturer requirements. I am still in the process of sending additional letters to get my engine replaced. I wish I had known about the problem with the Chrysler 3.7 liter engine beforehand and also how First Extended Service Corp. denies legitimate claims. This entire situation has been a complete ripoff from Chrysler not recalling an obviously defective engine and also because the extended warranty is a complete ripoff as well.

not always First Extended Fault

Not sticking up for the company however sometimes its the people who sold you the warranty

 

I bought a used ford windstar from Berlin City Auto Group in Williston, VT and I have  had problems with it in the last year and they covered the work 100% but now I too have a blown motor

 

First Extended will pay for a motor job however the car dealer is trying to screw me over on it

 

First they charged me for seals and gaskets which are covered and first extended was willing to pay for then they hit me with the so called others that first extended would not cover but when I called first extended once more they were more than willing to pay and as a matter of fact they told me to speak with a service manager or higher a general manager

 

So true they may try to rip you off but this is to show its not always them its sometimes the car dealer who sold you the warranty and just blaming them

 

So my advice is to call them no matter what the car dealer tells you on every little thing

Claims of maintenance need evidence

I have worked in dealership shops most of my life,(30+ years) and this is not an unusual situation. The customer plays for and extended warranty and thinks he does not need to do anything to their vehicle but put gas in it until it breaks down, then expects the warranty to take care of it. The fact that the person admits having a sludge problem tells me he did little to no maintenance, the technician involved probably had the evidence in his hands, regardless of the customer's protests otherwise. I too had a vehicle brought to me with a little over 60,000 miles on it, and a hole in the oil pan. That customer expected his extended warranty to fix it. When I removed the oil pan bolts, the pan was held in place by the 3 inches of solid sludge that had formed around the oil pump pickup in the pan. the upper end of the engine was in the same condition. When you buy an extended warranty, READ IT! Every warranty requires you to keep maintenance records on the vehicle, written proof that at the very least minimum manufacturer's guidelines have been followed. It does not matter that he "used products exceeding the manufacturer's recommendations" if he did not change the oil often enough, that is what causes sludge buildup. On the truck I experienced I spent 2 full hours cleaning up the mess in the oil cooler and lines with a pressurized oil flush machine before I would even think about connecting it back to an engine with all that black mass in it.

People always want to blame someone else for bad choices they made themselves, instead of taking responsibility for their actions. This was not a legitimate claim in my opinion, If the engine had appeared to have been maintained, they would not have even asked for records. I have also seen engines brought in locked up, or bearings wiped out, with brand new fresh oil in them, people don't realize that is a major clue with the engine locked up, then they put fresh oil in it to disguise that it was run low or empty, they don;t realize the clean oil does not make it to the filter, which is dry, or into the oil passages, since they are full of filth. Everyone wants to cry and point fingers because they were lazy, or stupid or both.

Just some common-sense insight. I also had my engine replaced. The engine shop made it absolutely clear that I was to maintain all engine related records for 1 year (length of warranty), ESPECIALLY OIL CHANGES. They STRESSED the fact that in order to maintain the warranty I had to get the oil changed on time and KEEP RECORDS in the glovebox with the engine warranty. Now common sense right here tells me NOT to have someone change my oil for me! And to take it to a shop where I'll have an INVOICE to keep w/my records, as they state. Failure to do so would void the warranty. Not too complicated.
