I received a collection notice from AFNI for a supposed debt for an old Verizon account. Based on information and advice from other Ripoff Reports, within 30 days of AFNI's letter, I sent a letter disputing the claim and requesting verification pursuant to the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act. I used a letter I found here as a template for my letter. I sent this letter via certified mail with return receipt.

I received the green return receipt card showing they had received my letter. Soon I received a letter from AFNI stating that they had investigated my dispute and the account has been closed, they will take no further collection action, and they will direct credit reporting agencies to remove the account from my credit report. Yay! Thank you to the helpful posts on this website!

Don't forget to check.

Great!!!

I would save the documents you have for 7 years just to be safe.

Also, I would wait about 60 days, and then check your credit reports to make sure that the information was removed! If it isn't removed, simply write a certified, return receipt requested letter to the credit bureaus (include a copy of the response from AFNI) and demand that it be removed per the FCRA.

These things CAN be fixed, but it takes time.

Don't forget to follow up by checking your credit reports!
