The following internet watch retailers are selling luxury watches that cannot be verified as authentic by the Federation of the Swiss Watch Industry. These are only but a handful of the companies who are providing counterfeits, replicas, and items that may be authentic but without warranty due to serious violations of the distribution agreement of their merchandise. It is the policy of the Federation of the Swiss Watch Industry to notify the public about these violations and to protect consumers from buying merchandise that is not sold as was intended by the manufacturer. Thousands and thousands of online buyers have already been defrauded. They have purchased counterfeits posing as the real thing and they have also purchased watches while not knowing that they will not be serviced by the manufacturer due to the violation of the lawful covenants involved.
Do not let it happen to you. Luxury timepieces are only sold through authorized retail outlets and not on the internet or by phone call or by mail order. The easiest method to avoid being sold a counterfeit timepiece or a timepiece that violates stipulations set forth between the manufacturer and authorized retailer, you should only purchase a luxury timepiece through the appropriate channels; authorized brick and mortar retail stores. No where else or you run a great risk.
The following websites provide bulletin boards and auctions for the trafficking of these infringing goods: ebay.com, timezone.com, watchnet.com, watchuseek.com, pmwf.com, watchea.com, thepurists.com, equationoftime.com, watchzone.net, watchparadise.com, wristwatch.net, and others. If you use or have used one of these websites to purchase a luxury watch presented as "brand new" or "new in box", then you without doubt have been duped.
These websites participate in the trafficking of the violating goods: Ashford.com, Markus Tschopp's Silvermagic (smwatches.com), Watchbuys, watchcat.com, Swiss Supply Direct, Inc, (swisssupply.com), Time Of Switzerland (timeofswitzerland.com), watchcommander.com, thewatchseller.com, finestwatches.com, timebeat.com, feelgoodwatches.com, watchzone.com, luxuryguru.com, luxurysquare.com, Robert Maron, Inc. Swiss Watch News 2004

Buying Watches On The Internet
Not A Good Idea
(March 23, 2004)
The Federal Customs Administration is faced with an increasing number of deliveries of watches ordered on the Internet, which in most cases infringe the various regulations in force. A point that the intended recipients are loathe to accept particularly when they have paid in advance!
As has been said before: the purchase of prestige watches on the Internet is not a good idea. Nor is this simply a reaction of defiance against new technology. A brief visit to the FH web site will probably serve to demonstrate that the Swiss watchmaking industry has not been slow to embrace the electronic promotion of "Swiss made" watches. Indeed, almost all FH members today have virtual shop windows. They invest considerable sums in the Internet to match the hopes generated by the medium everywhere. There is even one that has made "one to one" commerce the entire basis of its business.
Nevertheless, a "modus vivendi" very quickly became apparent in the world of timepieces in this respect. The Internet is not and never will be the most appropriate place to sell luxury watch products. A rapid survey of the most prestigious sites should be enough to convince anyone of this. Indeed, as soon as the home page is displayed, Internet users are warned in no uncertain terms that original products are sold exclusively by approved retailers and are under no circumstances available on the Internet.
What should we think then of the multitude of sites selling all models of all the leading Swiss manufacturers? A grey market? Free competition? Globalisation? Nonsense! One doesn't need a diploma from Saint-Gall or an MBA to realise that such sites cannot be official, and that therefore the products offered cannot be authentic. A little common sense is all it takes to see that these watches have nothing in commmon with Switzerland, and that the price paid, even if it seems reasonable, is greatly inflated. But after all, there is no law against stupidity and there are many who let themselves get duped, either through ignorance or for fun.
"A fault confessed is half redressed" says popular wisdom. Must we believe then that wisdom is not the strongest suit of those who surf the web? Watches bought on the Internet are delivered through the postal system and are systematically inspected by the competent customs authorities when they enter Switzerland. All those in violation of rules governing trademarks, designs, indications of origin, or rules for the marking of precious metals, are quarantined. A notification is sent to the addressees, politely advising them to forfeit their right to the goods or face legal action on the part of the rights holder. Pathetic or ridiculous, the intended recipients - all upright citizens no doubt - plead ignorance or good faith, then invoke the Olympic deities and end up by insulting the civil servants, who are simply doing their job (and doing it well).
It is therefore well worth mentioning here a basic truth. Counterfeiters are not those who protect intellectual designs, but those who unscrupulously plagiarise designers not to mention those who support the practice by buying counterfeit products. Even unbeknown to themselves!

#3 REBUTTAL Individual responds
Over th top
AUTHOR: Grospet - (United Kingdom)
SUBMITTED: Tuesday, June 03, 2008
Well, too much of that report is too far over the top for the it's whole to have much perceived credibility. That really is a shame; it's obvious that there has been a lot of time and effort put into it. A little self-control would have added considerable value.
What IS true about internet buying is that it's a minefield of anything, whatever the product and not just watches. For most of this rebuttal I'll focus on eBay, probably the largest internet source of watches, certainly a source with a full range of sellers, from saints to satans. I'm a watch fan, by no means an expert, and I collect on a modest scale. I'm by no means a watch anorak, or geek, or whatever term in your culture combines knowledge and obsession. But even I can see that the headline of a watch sale pitch is very dangerous indeed for the average watch-buyer, someone who wants to get more bang for their bucks, buying a present for a loved one. The descriptions in the body of the entry generally make a bad start worse.
Why? Well, eBay do nothing to ensure a standardised, safe and comprehensive vocabulary, leaving mis-use of basic terms lying in wait for the unwary. Here's a few terms like that, just off the top of my head: gold, (for gold plated); gold plated, (gold coloured); automatic, (anything but automatic); new, (pristine condition); pristine condition, (not too scratched); in box, (no useful meaning); authentic of any major brand, (counterfeit); and so on, (that's enough, there are so many it gets boring!).
The "unwary" element works both ways. Long ago, I had an unfortunate incident with a quartz watch described as automatic by the seller. Turned out the seller was a very upset lady, selling some of her late husband's possessions for a down-sizing exercise. She had followed the description used by one of her children who gave the watch to their father on what turned out to be his last birthday. Sounds like BS? Sure does, but it wasn't: turned out she lived not far from me, and we met up in a local coffee bar to solve the problem. A very genuine lady, now one of my wife's friends.
Most mis-description seems quite cynical, with the same people offering the same mis-described watches again and again. I benefitted from the advice of an artisan jeweller who makes bespoke pieces for many members of my family, having sold his store to go into semi-retirement, but I still had a few near misses. I once watched an imprudent bid survive right up to less than an hour before the end of the auction, that being one incident that taught me not to be so self-confident.
Most people who got what they thought they were getting from an eBay watch auction succeeded only because the seller was well-informed and honest. Their own purchasing nous just didn't come into it.
eBay or not, there's the problem with the swingeing report to which I am responding. There are very many honest and knowledgeable people selling on eBay, and elsewhere on the internet, and who endeavour to treat their clients as just that: clients. I'm disabled, so a lot of all my purchasing arrives from remote sellers. I checked through my recent watch purchases via eBay. Arbitrarily I went 12 watches back: 6 were really excellent deals from my perspective; 2 were very good; 3 were good; one was too much money for the watch. That last one was my fault; I got carried away. But then I could have done that in a specialised store, on any product.
Also, after my first reading of the report, I went through the watches for sale newly listed today on eBay UK and eBay Spain. Whoa: the current buzz-words are still "tourbillon", "diver" and "aviator". "Tourbillon" translates to "exposed balance wheel". "Diver" and "aviator" translate to "any watch with one characteristic related to (the relevant profession)". eBay do nothing about them, but they are just three cases where eBay repeatedly in effect "co-operates" in potentially fraudulent selling. When intentional, they are traps set specifically to get as much money as possible from the average buyer, by whatever means available. We used to say just "scam", but in today's world that's probably not acceptable.
But there is a lot of safe purchasing to be made with eBay and the rest of the internet. I have an internet-sourced and locally verified Rolex Daytona, similarly an Omega Constellation, an Ebel, a Longines and a Maurice Lacroix. I don't usually buy watches that expensive, and without the internet I would not have bought those five, on account of their "list" prices. Three of them came from jewellers with their own "real" stores complementing their "virtual" stores. More knowlegeable, more experienced and better off watch fans than I will have done a lot better than, and they will have located far more many traps than I have found. But I've never fallen into a trap, so far, touch wood, cross my heart and other efficient counter-measures.
The internet is not devoid of opportunities for buying prestigious watches from reputable professionals. Nor is it devoid of people wrecking the value of their submissions by lacking nuance in their thoughts and/or expressions. Nor is it devoid of sellers running deliberate schemes for defrauding the naive potential purchasers of which eBay and similar are very far from devoid indeed.
Buyer beware. Have fun.

This Complaint Not Valid
AUTHOR: Darryl - (U.S.A.)
SUBMITTED: Sunday, July 23, 2006
Of the companies listed as "traffickers" we have had professional transactions with several of them & most are reputable solid companies giving the USA consumer a fair deal. What this bogus complaint really is about is the Swiss watch industry trying to maintain their outrageous profit margins. Most luxury wristwatches are sold to the retail stores at 40-50% less than the retail price, so if you pay retail for these products you are guaranteed to be "ripped off". There is simply no excuse for these high margins (Car dealers & Electronics stores sell equally expensive items & yet their markup is 10-20%). The claim that these watches cannot be verified is laughable. If you purchase a luxury timepiece online you can have it authenticated by your local watch repair facility in just a few minutes. It is wise to use your credit card for your online purchase so that you are protected & then get an appraisal/authentication done locally. Our current firm swissluxury.com has sold authentic Rolex watches for many years & while we provide a lifetime guarantee as to authenticity, it has never once needed to be used.

You are tarring all these sites with the same brush.
AUTHOR: Tony - (Australia)

The majority of this report is spot-on. However, at one point I find the following:
"If you use or have used one of these websites to purchase a luxury watch presented as "brand new" or "new in box", then you without doubt have been duped."
Both timezone.com and thepurists.com (listed above that sentence) have very clear "conditions of use" on their watch trading pages, barring the listing for sale of "brand new in box" or "new in box" watches.
I follow these sites closely and have observed that any such listings are usually deleted very rapidly. I have purchased several second-hand watches through these sites and have never had a problem. The sites are used extensively by genuine enthusiasts to trade genuine second-hand goods, and I believe that the owners and moderators of these sites would like to keep it that way, and are therefore very diligent in their policing.
Therefore I would hope that you will revisit these claims and moderate them appropriately.
