We own a small business in Chattanooga, TN and perform property preservation services all over TN and North GA. We primarily do work for Safeguard Properties, Inc (based out of Cleveland, OH) and have since 2004. In September 2005, Safeguard asked us to perform rehab services on several houses in Tennessee for the victims of Hurricane Katrina.
We performed the work on the houses here to the tune of $55,000 worth. Since then, we have not been paid for our services due to one excuse after another from Safeguard. We are not the only contractors that have heard the non-ending excuses about how HUD hasn't paid Safeguard, HUD is requiring receipts for every little thing - nails, paint, screws, cleaners, etc.
We are just a husband and wife with 6 kids....we have laid off all of our contractors - at one point we had 25. We have lost all of our personal real estate investments due to not getting paid. We are being forced to close our business due to all of this.
Safeguard Properties' President, Robert Klein, assured us that we would all be paid within 48 hours of completing the work on each house. That is what we agreed to. That has not happened and does not appear that it will happen anytime soon. Numerous people there have made so many promises to us about getting paid. We cannot speak with Robert Klein now...none of the contractors can.

Safeguard Properties admit to misbilling in excess of $30,000 but still no money!

On Monday 6-26-06 after speaking with Jay Klein, son of owner of Safeguard Properties Robert Klein, Jay indicated that our company was chargedback $75000 for advances on work done for Katrina Relief. The true amount advanced was $45,000 that was paid back BEFORE they ever billed or paid to us. Money was taken from seperate contracts for work on non-related properties for preservation work yet still haven't paid for the Katrina work that was completed 10 monhs ago. The owner, Robert Klein, who contacted us via conference calls prior to agreeing to work, promised paymen t on ALL Katrina Rehabs to be QC'ed and paid within 72 hours, he now refuses to return calls and sends back OUT OF OFFICE reply's to ALL e-mail requests.
