PUBLIC NOTICE
Please be advised that International Academy of Merchandising & Design (Canada) Ltd; International Academy of Design and Technology, Toronto, Ltd.; and The Toronto Film School a division of the International Academy of Design and Technology is a private school operating in Canada under the umbrella of the Career Education Corporation (USA based Company) out of Hoffmen Estates IL, and is collectively known as the IADT or (IOAD), are currently involved in several civil cases in the Ontario Courts [staring in and around late 2006 until current] that have been filed by a number of ex-students of the IADT in the matters arising from the IADT's misrepresentations and breaching of student enrollment agreements.
If you are a prospective student or parent of a student looking to enroll into the IADT-Toronto Film School [rumered to be shutting it doors by the end of 2008] please consider the aformentioned articles on this site Re: IADT-Toronto Film School as having truth.
Furthermore, be advised that IADT will not inform, advise, disclose, or otherwise notify students at the time of their enrollment, registration, tour(s), and by all like procedures when selling their programs that they will reguire students to discharge their argreements by means of using a waiver.
IADT leads students to believe their school offers a 'good-faith' agreement allowing eligability and entitlment of free employment counsultation, placement services, job leads (within their field of study), employment assistence, collectivly Carrer Services to all student enrolled in their private school and who will be employable immediatlly after graduation.
When in reality within weeks prior to a students graduation and when it is time for students to become employed and find work [so that they can begin paying back the $20,000+ debt they inncured through student loans] IADT will require as company protocal that before they will/can be able to provided Career Services to students that students must first sign and fill out a small package of required administration forms to collect personal contact information that systematically conceals within them an undisclosed legal insturment entitled "Waiver of Employment Assistance" intented for students to waive their rights under their enrollment agreement and give up all advantage allowing the IADT to discharge their enrollment agreement without IADT ever having to fulfill their legal obligations.
For further information, or if you were a past, or are a current student of the IADT and you feel that your rights have been infringed upon and that you feel you have suffered a loss as a result of the IADT's practices please submit a rebuttal to this post and a contact address may be arranged.

IADT did not live up to their promises
AUTHOR: Nika - ()

I was a student at IADT Toronto in 2003. At the time I enrolled, I was told that they were working on getting their FIDER accreditation for the Interior Design program and it was to come through shortly; and that I would be able to graduate with a Bachelor's degree. The classes had some good information, but I never felt like I was being properly trained in my chosen field.
I accrued debt due to student loans and after a year we found out that they were not going to receive the accreditation after all. It has been ten years and in that time I remarried and moved so I did not know about the lawsuit and school closing until now. What can I do? I still owe money in loans. Is there a way to get the debt excused? Any information would be helpful.

Very misleading claim

I attended the Toronto Film School in 2005. When I applied I spoke with a man named Walter, who told me they had a post graduate employment rate of 90%. No work in the field of film and $20 000 later, I got a call from a company that surveys former students for the Academy. The lady asked me if I was currently working. I said yes (I worked at a grocery store to pay the bills). She said thank you and hung up. I suppose 90% of their graduates have a job, but they don't care where it is. I can't even explain how furious I was after that call.
The teachers were mostly people who couldn't get work in the film industry, and sometimes classes were cancelled because they were off doing their own projects. I remember one incident when there were no cameras in the equipment room to use for class because a teacher had taken them to film a band.
The computers were horrible. Only a few of the USB plugs worked so there was very limited time to get your work onto the computer to edit it. In our last semester, we had our short film projects. The big finale, as it were. Well they picked then to change the computer system from Mac to Windows. We couldn't even properly edit our final project and the culmination of our education, because all our editing courses were finished with in 4th semester. My friend ended up paying someone else to edit his film instead of spending his time (and I'm sure more of his money, because you can't tell me they wouldn't have charged him to take the editing courses again), learning a whole new system.
A teacher told us our diploma would be useful to white balance a camera. Such is the level of encouragement that we got at this school.

My course isn't even offered and I had no help!

Hi there,
I "graduated" from Toronto Film School in 2006 from entertainment and business management course. I was promised the same, career services and all but never received a single email to a job related to my field of study. Now the course isn't even offered so I don't know if my "diploma" has any accreditation.
I would love to get my tuition back and put into a school that actually teaches and delivers on its promises so that I too can have a successful life!

Suspicious of IADT's Intentions

first let me say that i feel like im waking up from a deep fog. the moment i enrolled at iadt, it was a nightmare. most of the issues were due to financial aid. nothing went right. now i feel like i have been tricked or bamboozeled into signing my life away.
i first began this quest in orlando, where just about everything went wrong. then i transferred back home due to the stress and emotional issues that ensued from this masquerade. once i was home i decided to transfer to iadt detroit. another mistake. not only did they continue the same practices they were even less professional, kind and more incompetent. the closer i get to graduating the more issues occur. every single term, every single one i have had to deal with issues of their incompetence! once i got in they dropped that i was close to my loan limit.
their behavior became even more undulling when i challeneged a grade, their treatment of me as a student and questioned everyone's capabilites. once a financial aid advisor saw that i was close to my student loan limit they told me i could pay out of pocket or takke out a loan. once i said i woould pay out of pocket, out of sheer ignorance and determination to finish my degree, then i never recieved a call back. call the director of education, never recieved a call back. i mentioned that i thought the school was a scam and money pit.
i think we should all get together and file a class action suit agaisnt them, all locations. please contact me with any information in your or thers pursuit of justice. their practices have to be unfair and or unlawful. they must be held responsible.

Dazed and Confused

I am a prior student of IADT under the Post Production Video Editing Program. I am a current US Citizen and was enrolled under a Student Permit to Canada. My intentions have always been to enroll in a film school ever since graduating High School. I was planning on following a close friend of mine to a film school in Clearwater, Florida (FULL SAIL). He had nothing but high remarks for the program and I was looking foward to join in on the adventure. Before any commitments to Florida, I was informed that my father would be stationed in Toronto, Canada for duty. He had suggested for me to join him and enroll in the International Academy of Design and Technology. Everything looked good on pamphlets and brochures, however realizing now, never really looked into first hand experiences from the program. The Program sounded interesting with a hefty price tag, but I figured the opportunity to go to film school in Toronto, a place I never would have pictured myself living in, would be worth the trip. The program I enrolled in would be Post-Production Video Editing, something I thought would be very interesting. Here's the gag though, easing into the coursework and assignments, I had yet to be overwhelmed. The instructors for the technical courses ended up being the textbooks themselves. Sure, guided instructions were included, but I would have thought being inrolled in a technical school I would be razzled and dazzled with tricks of the trade. Some lecture courses, failed to intrigue. Before I knew it, the program was halfway though, and yet nothing to brag about to friends back home. Now I felt that backing out of the program was too late, the damage was done, and all I had to do was stick it through and hope that it picked up towards the end. I mean the program also emphasized in assistance with career placement. I was just not feeling what my friend in Florida had been describing. 20,000+ in debt now and I cannot find a job, not because I cannot find listings, but because I don't feel qualified to even attempt to apply. By posting IADT as my education background, people are asking what is IADT, does it even exist? I feel terrible right now, tons in debt, inadequately trained, bout ready to join the military to to find a new direction in my life. If anyone out there, has any tips or help, would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I believe I've also been ripped off by IADT Toronto and I'd like my $7000 back quite frankly.
AUTHOR: The New Blueguy - (Canada)

It's been four years now and it still cuts like a knife. What could I do about it anyway right?
I believe IADT Toronto bamboozled me for $7000. It would've been more had I not changed my my mind about signing the final declaration of the OSAP cheque. I was a student of IADT in 2005 from July to mere August and within weeks of shoddy teaching techniques and false promises I left the school after writing a $7000 cheque. You see, I was apparently penalized for failure of my courses after their so-called agreement went sour. I was told repeatedly by my admissions advisor upon registering that I would not have to pay a cent until the OSAP loan came through and covered me, thus leaving me to pay the difference. Well, I can say that for the entire time I was there they hounded me with their glorified loan sharks breathing down my neck for money.
The classes taught are ridiculous even compared to High School courses, and I recall to this day, during a figure drawing class to "just scribble, you'll get it eventually".
So anyway, they say I failed these courses and still have to pay for them even though I was clearly told that OSAP would cover me. And that even if I wanted to repeat the courses that I'd have to pay double -- the original course fees plus again for repeating. I was then advised that my only choice was to dropout for $7000.
I want my money back and I want them shut down. Period.

iadt ripped me off!
AUTHOR: Matt - (Canada)

i took the film production course at iadt toronto. after 2 semester i realized how much of a rip off the school was. 15,000 dollars later all i learned was how to setup a camera and what a master shot was. As much as it pained me to quit on something, i just had to. i could of bought my own equiptment and then researched how to set up a camera on the internet for well under 10 grand. another thing i hated was some of the teachers, one teacher in particular...."grasshoper" i believe was his nick name. he was the worst teacher, a pathetic excuse for a human being who had never done anything in the industry. for 2 classes in a row he made us watch his stupid homemade looking video of one of his friends bands playing....nothing artsy at all...just a load of garbage. and alot of the times classes would be cut short or cancelled all together...if you break it down your paying around 120-200 a class. the biggest regret i have is attending this awful school, and now i want my money back? any suggestions, is it even worth a try? who would i talk to? and advice would be helpful, thanks
