I have had short term disability coverage with aflac for one year and am pregnant. I was told by the sales agent when I signed up that this would "take care of me when I was unable to work during my pregnancy and maternity leave" I was also told that the claim would be very easy and that it would only take 4 days to process.
It has been almost a month of me jumping through burning hoops and they keep finding loopholes and excuses not to pay my claim. They last sent me a new claim form with everything highlighted that I needed filled out from my doctor, I had her fill it out exactly as they said and I sent it in. Now they say I am missing something else. AFLAC short term disability is a rip off.
Now they are telling me I can only get payment for the time AFTER I deliver the baby. I am so sick of it and out of money since they refuse to pay. But I continue to pay them bi weekly, for what?

Why Publish Your Shortcomings?

If you had read your policy when you received it then you would not have had all the issues that you state in you complaint. The policy is very clear. You can not claim a disability before the fact, hence until you give birth or the doctor states that you must be home bound to protect the pregnancy you can not claim disability. DUH! The Doctor is the one that determines when your disability begins not you. It is also obvious that you failed to provide a completed claim form. How can they make a determination if you do not give them all the information? DUH! It is your responsibilty to provide them with a completed claim form with the supporting documentation, you are the one receiving the benefit payment. Your problem is you did not take the time to read and find out what to do and because of that you are fast to blame the company for your short comings. Become an informed consumer and you will prevent the hassles that you had to go through.

Not enough information

When's the effective date of your policy?
Giving birth within the first 10 months of the effective date of the policy as a result of normal pregnancy, including cesarean (complications of pregnancy will be covered to the same extent as a sickness) is EXCLUDED.
Your story sounds a lot like you gave birth in the 10 month waiting period. Aflac would then pay you for bed rest, as your agents told you.
If this doesn't help, email me the claim forms they want you to fill out.

you were a lousy district

This is to District Manager who states clients are not taken care of. If you really were a DSC and you didn't take care of your clients you were a poor excuse od a District. My agents and I are constantly in touch with clients to help them handle claims and maqke sure that they know exactly what they are entitled to with their policies. I am A DSC in New York State and have never heard such excuses. You were with Aflac for nine years and apparently neglected your policyholders, but you stayed around long enough to get vested in renewals. I was taught the exact opposite of you I was trained to help the policyholders first and foremost.
If the policyholders are not given proper presentations and information then they may have confusion over what is covered with particular policies.
The bottom line is if the policy and disclosure statement is read and discussed at the time of enrollment then there will be very few issues.

WHAT DOES YOUR CONTRACT SAY?

Insurance salesmen will say anything to get a sale. How does the contract read? Although I've never heard of pregnancy being covered as short term disability, it does not mean it isn't covered. So how does it read?

AFLAC complaints are common

I was appointed with them for the last 9 years. I was a district manager, with managers and agents underneath me.
I have to say, AFLAC is nowhere near the best. Look around at Colonial or Allstate.
AFLAC does one thing- sell your employees something. They do nothing to help the employer. Worse, AFLAC agents are poorly trained and have little to no understanding of how a health plan works. How does the salesperson know what an employee needs, if they don't understand the risks for that employee?
I just left AFLAC after years of making excuses to my clients, and now I am with a competitor that actually properly trains their agents, has tools and solutions to help the employer, and where we sit with an employee and actually help them rather than simply sell them something.

I also have an AFLAC short term disability policy. I am 42 years old and pregnant with twins. My specialist put me on medical leave from work to try to do everything we can to prevent preterm labor. I immediately called my AFLAC rep and initiated the proper paperwork...I've been off work for more than 6 weeks - been getting the run around...requesting additional info from my Dr, etc. I just got a letter from AFLAC DENYING my claim - saying they won't pay until after delivery because they can't determine that my disability is because of complications due to pregancy...my "rep" said that my Dr just needs to be more specific about the reasons he doesn't want me to work...so that "AFLAC can decide whether it will be covered - if it qualifies" -- WHAT A CROCK - they promise you the world - to be there when something unexpected happens and then try EVERYTHING they can to tell you that you don't qualify...MEANWHILE - I'm still paying premiums although I have NO PAYCHECK coming in! If I hear one of my kids mimic that duck again - I"m getting a duck hunting license - just to relieve a bit of stress ;)
