I work for Auto Zone as a commercial driver (I deliver parts from Auto Zone to car repair businesses in a 50 mile radius). When I had my interview the manager said we would discuss the pay if I got hired. After 2 interviews I was hired for $8.00 an hour. He told me I would get hazard pay and periodic raises after 90 days. I put in my 90 days and 2 days before my 90 days was completed everyone else got a raise and I was told that I had to wait till next year to get my raise because I did not have my 90 days in at the time. I was steaming.
I went over and above what I was supposed to do. I kept all the trucks clean and made sure they were safe. Checked oil, tire pressure, etc... I cleaned the bathrooms in the store and made sure they looked neat and tidy. Nobody else seemed to do this which I found odd. I would be sent on errands in the company truck, such as, going to pick up carryout food for store employees (supervisors and managers included), going to do personal banking for the manager, sent to Walmart to get change because the manager forgot to get it ahead of time.
If any of this interfered with my lunch either my manager or my supervisor would ask for my password and clock me in and out. (I'm pretty sure that was not allowed). I was also asked to deliver parts during my lunch hour and on my way home. (I would leave to go home and call the store after I had delivered the parts on my way home and they would clock me out---And again I'm sure that is not allowed). When interviewed I was told that I would have to be able to lift 40 pounds. Some of the rotors and hubs and batteries weigh much more than 40 pounds. They have to be lifted. People have hurt themselves doing this and if they weren't wearing a back brace at the time they are screwed. I won't lift anything I can't and at times get into trouble for it.
At first I was working about 38 hours and sometimes went over 40 hours by a few minutes. Auto Zone does not allow any overtime so this was a no-no. Then when insurance enrollment came around my hours got cut down to under 30 hours. (With Auto Zone anything over 35 hours is considered full time). I was told by an employee at another store that they do this every year when there is open enrollment for insurance.
I explained to my manager that I could not afford insurance anyway because I was a single parent and had to use all of my pay just to pay my bills and get by. I was assured that was not the reason my hours were cut. I was told that business was slow and I would get more when it picked back up. I kept checking the numbers (amount of sales) and they were going up, not down. So I feel that I was lied to.
Mean while I kept getting further behind in my bills at home. Then when cold weather came my hours got cut even more. I am now down to 11 hours a week and at $8.00 an hour, that doesn't pay many bills. And every time I check the numbers they are right up there. Which leads me to believe there is no good reason to have my hours cut.
I watch the counter employees add items to the customers purchases, such as bulb grease, or belt dressing, etc..without their knowledge. I have heard the manager tell them to do it. I feel that it is wrong and the customer is none the wiser. I also have read that all the Auto Zones do this. There aught to be a law.
I am currently looking for another job while working my 11 hours a week at Auto Zone. Auto Zone does not give a rat's a-- about their employees so if you are looking for a job, stay clear of Auto Zone!!!

I began reading this report because initially it hit close to home as I was mislead In my interview with my then DM... not lied to but certainly mislead. I can't claim that it was malicious and/or premeditated but in hindsight he was quite eager to change the subject and therefore averting any potential clarification of Autozone policy regarding frequency of reviews, potential raise amounts and most importantly the number of reviews per year that may be accompanied by a raise... now I know how to word it, lesson learned. Coming up on my 3rd year with AZ and my wage looks to not even keep pace with minimum wage her in CA.
I definitely related to the original poster as I instinctly bust my a*s day in and day out and feel overworked, under paid, and save for a select few PSMs, my CSM, and my SM (when hes in a good mood, really a coin flip) underappreciated (something is awry when I have to give my SM tips on how to boost morale and productivity with simple positive feedback rather than just negative coaching... the compliment sandwich can make someones day and drive them to improve on that one negative. Yeah, i dont understand why im still a redshirt either :b ).
As i read on more it became clear that either this store has several severe problems that need to be addressed before they incur a serious lawsuit or the OP felt slighted and began putting extras on everything. This complaint turned from a valid complaint about some pretty inappropriate practices to what appears to be a bitter redshirt making inaccurate claims which sadly does undermine anything valid that was stated. What a shame. I understand feeling screwed over by AZ but if you cant keep cool enough to remain somewhat professional in your complaint and stick strictly to the facts then it makes you look foolish, childish and worst of all it paints a picture in peoples minds that us drivers deserve what we must deal with because in their eyes we must all make inac urate claims to whine about what to them seems to tbe average workplace annoyances that we all deal with.
However, to the PSM who provided the rebuttal: all i have to say is the attitude you appear to have quickly jumped to right out of the gate is a prime example of why people like the OP sometimes feel the need to come to a site like this rather than follow our chain of command. When your redshirts feel ridiculed and attacked or casually dismissed far too readily it does nothing but create a cancer that is not easily eradicated because its far to easy to crack down on the replaceable entry level guy rather than address the real problem that is the seed for all these issues: disrespect and negative attitudes from "managers" (We all know psms are really just supervisors in their rroles when compared to CSMs and SMs) instead of what really should be practiced which is supportive coaching for growth and an environment where we can safely and respectfully communicate concerns in efforts to improve morale and productivity (then sales go up because happy employees create happy customers and happy customers tend to become return customers).
To summarize: OP - i feel your pain, but you have to choose your words more wisely if you want to be taken seriously.
PSM - Good luck to you and I wish you nothing but success and improvement in your future occupational responsibilities and aspirations.

OK, where to begin.....
Let's start with the lies you have said.....
1. AutoZone never gives a 90 day raise, so your claim that everyone else but you got one was fail. AutoZone gives a review every fall, and if you didn't start by May of that year, you have not been there long enough to receive the yearly raise.
2. There is no such thing as "hazard pay" at AutoZone, especially for the drivers, who do the least amount of work of any employee they have.
3. You lied about AutoZone having to consider anything over 35 hours as full time. "Full time" and "part time" are positions, regardless of the amount of hours worked.
As to the rest of your story, and believe me, it IS a story as in fairy tale, there are just inaccuracies one after the other. Lifting without a backbelt on would be impossible for a driver seeing as how they are REQUIRED to wear one the entire shift. NOBODY in AutoZone is supposed to have your password to clock in or out except for you, so if you DID give it to someone, you better change it.
I have the list in front of me of all AutZone store numbers, so in a few hours when I get to my store I shall be checking with the stores in Akron to see if they still have you employed, seeing as how your story of lies is ALSO against one of the policies you SIGNED. See ya Chuck, enjoy the breadlines.
