Thumbplay fraudulent company practices, unauthorized sign up for services, unauthorized charges for services, New York City New York

I received 5 text messages from thumbplay on my cellphone. One was a ringtone, the others were adverts for more ringtones and an option to stop the service. I text messaged "STOP" back to them and contacted the company. I was told by a rep that I had signed up for their service online today. She said I had been text messaged a password, and had sent that password in to start service with them. There is a charge of $9.99 per month for this service. They insisted the only way they could have gotten my number was by my signing up and the only way I could have gotten the text messages was by using the password they sent. None of this happened. I have never been to their site, never signed up for their services, never used a password. The text messages from them were a complete surprise. I demanded to speak to a supervisor and was put through to one. She told me the same thing and that my carrier had already been charged for the service and I would have to give her my full name, address, etc and they would issue me a refund check. She claimed to be unable to issue a credit with my cell company and claimed only to be able to issue a check. I refused. Red flags everywhere. Instead, I called my cell carrier and spoke to them. They will remove any charges that show up and take care of this. I searched the internet and have found they have done this to many, many, many people. Many have not noticed the charges for months due to direct pay for their phone service. Others have tried to end service without success. This company is scamming consumers and needs to be investigated. BEWARE.
