These stories are really heartbreaking. One of the best revenges you can pay to KU is to post here, and hope that prospective students read it. KU has and will do whatever they please to make a profit from students, and complaining to the BBB or hiring a lawyer is close to a waste of time if you dont have an iron clad case. They are definitely not in the charity business nor do they care a fig about your ruined credit.
Unfortunately for you, agencies like the state attornie Generals and DOE deal with KU's lawyers and before you know it, your complaint is explained away and will be iced over like a pretty wedding cake. So if you go this route with the agencies, make sure you were definitely wronged. If not You will waste a lot of time so read all the fine print on your enrollment agreement and loan paperwork. If you slipped up one iota from what the contracts say, you are out of luck in getting your debts errased.
This company preys on people who are first time college students who don't know all the financial rules and guidelines. They get sold a dream, get promised lots of lies, and then are shocked and amazed when they get a collections call for a couple of thousand, cash on the barrel. Your credit is ruined? Not their prob.
So the best bet is to keep this thread going, and maybe prospective students will read it and stay away. If you have a case, go for it. But just remember what you are dealing with.

Kaplan should be put out of business

I was enrolled with Kaplan for several semesters. After two semesters with extremely poor professors in a row, I left them. As usual, they always find a way that one owes them money.
Both times that I had problems involved rogue professors that did anything they wished, without any control from the university. Because of their actions and inactions, I had to pay the price.
In the last semester that finally influenced my decision to drop this worthless school, classes started on Wednesday. This particular class didn't meet until Tuesday. After the first lecture, it was announced that the instructor would not provide any feedback about the grade given for any assignments or tests, except for the midterm. On the very first assignment, I received a 70% with no explanation and no indication of what I missed. When I asked the professor for more details, I received a curt "read your syllabus".
I ended up having to drop this Business Law class as I could not afford to fail and not even know why.
But, that's where they got me!!!! Kaplan only gives you one week to drop/add a course and my advisor was conveniently not available. I left messages, but another advisor never returned my call. By the time I was able to talk to someone, the week was gone, I could not add another class, and because I wasn't carrying 2 classes, my student loan would not pay. I had to pay for the class out of my own pocket!!!
On top of that, because I still owe them from their problems, they won't release my transcript that would allow me to enroll in another school.
Avoid Kaplan at all costs....because it will cost you plenty!

I agree with you also. I have been going for well over a year. I had to withdraw due to health issues in 2006. I was not informed I would owe for the class. Whe I was ready to restart in 2007 I was told I had a zero balance. I have been going for 2 years. Now I am told I owe 3600 dollars. They should have NEVER allowed me to restart with a balance due. They are lying cheaters. They must be stopped. My hopes for the future have been destroyed. It is wrong. They will never hear the last of me.

ME TOO
AUTHOR: Shutupjoe - (U.S.A.)

I signed up for Kaplan and told them I could not afford any out-of-pocket until after I had graduated and was working. I was assured I wouldn't be paying anything, that my Grant and Student loan would pay for everything. At the END of the second quarter I received a bill saying my student account was past due. Apparently I owed Kaplan money so they blocked me from my student account. Now I owe Chase Bank nearly $7000 (with interest) and Kaplan (Pinnacle Financial now) $684 and I had a Pell Grant. I couldn't graduate because I couldn't afford $300+ a quarter (as I explained to them in the beginning). They even waived the $95 fee to sign up because I couldn't afford it! Their classes were borderline robotic and they put me in for Corporate Law when I wanted Family Law.
I was told the cost per credit hour would be about the same as a "physical" college. It is actually, on average, $75 more. Now my credit is ruined and I can't afford to pay any of the debts back. I refuse to pay Kaplan University back because of their stupidity! I didn't even know about the supposed debt until at the end of the second quarter. When I went on my student account to check on my financial coverage it showed that I would be refunded a small amount for living expenses. Yet, the money I owe Kaplan was because the Financial Aid and Student Loan didn't cover everything.....

RIPPED OFF TOO

Will join you. I have a motion layout should you need it to take them to court.
Filing suit myself for slander as well against them as they can't bill the VA worth a rats. Now they want me to pay for another year? I dont think so.They should have fixed thier web server issues long ago.
Don't even bother with this company.Company uses BAIT and SWITCH and MEDIA HYPE to boost new clientel. They make promises they can't keep such as 'no out of pocket costs'.I've paid almost 850 extra this term, and they are threatening to take another 2600 for the rest of the year. Go with another University.
Devry can't maintain thier web system either.Proof is on the website. If you can't maintain that, you can't maintain a server under heavy load.
U of P is another good choice, so is Capella, especially for those in IT.IA is the Government standard.
I would strongly NOT advise Keiser (now university) for the same reasons as DeVry.This is the same reason I'm leaving Kaplan for as well.

I have been ripped off by Kaplan as well, and I filed with the BBB but that did not help. Here is a site that I received from a BBB employee to continue with my complaint: http://app1.800helpfla.com/cswebcomplaints/FileComplaint.aspx
Somehow we all need to put an end to this, it is crazy and uncalled for. If anyone wants to see about hiring an attorney in this matter, let me know and maybe we can work on this together.

I have been a victim as well

I was also ripped off by Kaplan University. I was told by the representatives after I had decided to attend another university that I owed Kaplan money. When I first enrolled in Kaplan I was covered by loans and grants to pay my tuition in its entirety. Kaplan informed me that I owed them money because their financial aid office returned my loan money back to Citibank. I did not authorize this return nor was I informed that they were going to return these funds.
When I contacted Citibank I was informed (Dec 2009) by them that they no longer did business with Kaplan. Although Kaplan sent me to them after they informed me that my funds were returned by F.A. (Financial Aid).
When I tried to contact my F.A. advisor and her supervisor via e-mail and phone they never returned any of my calls. I also started to contact Kaplan by e-mail after my phone conversations because the information they told me over the phone would be opposite of what they would e-mail and after so many lies I needed a paper trail.
It came to a point in time where Kaplan would not respond to me at all and only have Student Accounts contact me to collect money and when I tried to speak with them about my account they would say that they were not authorized to answer my questions.
I supposedly owe Kaplan $4,011.18 and they have sent this to collections although I contacted them on numerous occasions to make payment arrangements. I'm an average student and I work full-time in a financial field and I will say that the way Kaplan does business is not like any company that I have ever dealt with. They steal your money and then they charge you fees that are not owed to them.
The money that they say I owed is from 2006, although I attended the school from 2006 until 2008 and the funds from 2007 & 2008 school year were paid. Now I'm not a genius but I signed an agreement with Kaplan in the beginning that said that I could not proceed to the next semester unless funds from the previous semester were paid. So my question is how can I owe money for a semester but was able to attend the university after the balance was created or owed. Also I don't understand why my academic advisor and F.A. advisor never informed me that I owed a balance or that they returned money that was sent to them from the loan company.
I just want justice and to be treated fairly. I work very hard for my money and the way Kaplan has treated me and the other people that have wrote post is very unethical. I'm trying to figure out how they are still in business and how Kaplan can be a subsidiary of the Washington Post Company. If you need to contact me please feel free to do so because I'm willing collaborate to receive justice.

Having just graduated with a 4 year degree in Criminal Justice I was informed that I owe them 6000.00. I contacted my financial aid officer who said that it just landed on her desk and it has been over 7 months. I told her that I needed an official transcript to apply ofr a government job and she would see what she could do. It has been over 1 month and have not heard anything else from her. Just sent her another email to find out what is going on, but it would seem that legally the attorney general and other government officials should be notified because I thought I was the only one going through this. They should not be allowed to do this and I am sure there is someonething that we all can do to prevent them from getting away with this. I am looking at legal avenues to see if I can get my degree and official transcript so I can at least obtain a job.

I am having a very similar issue with Kaplan (take the money and run) University. I agree that they should be held accountable, and plan to file a report with the Better Business Bureau. I am going to look into legal avenues as well, although I don't have much money for retainers or other fees...
