Levittown, New York1/31/2007, I had hired movers to move my 2 home (2 bedrooms and a living room). They were supposed to show up at 1:00pm that day and did not show up until 6:25 pm.
They were talking on their cell phones constantly, smoking cigerettes in the home (where smoking was not allowed), standing around, and just generally taking a very long time to move any peice of furniture. After about 3 hours they drove my stuff to my new apartement 15 minutes away.
Here they were very rude, saying that they couldn't get our couch or box springs up the stairs. However, with some prompting they EASILY got the chair and box springs up.
For the bigger couch, my landlord offered an alternative way to get the remaining couch up the stairs, this involved tying a rope around it and pulling it up the balcony. To this they replied 'this isn't a circus, we will do no such thing'. The couch was then left in the driveway (the legs of the couch are still missing to this day).
When they were done (the couch was still left outside and there was damage to the door and wall)it was 11:30 pm. I went to tip them the 50 dollars I thought they deserved after being rude and extremely late. To this he replied that isn't enough and that I needed to tip at least 75 dollars.
In addition to this, he had charged us for duct tape, a box, plastic bags for the mattress and the box spring (most of which wasn't requested or communicated had an additional cost). This came to over 100 dollars. Moreover, due to the excessive talking on the phone and smoking cigerettes (it's very hard to carry a couch with one hand and a cell phone), we were charged an additional hour than was decided on.
Of course we were short the money since we had decided on a specific amount. I offered a check or credit card, to this they got very mad saying that they only accepted cash (which was never told to me). I finally wrote a check out to cash, gave them the tip they requested (mostly to avoid anymore yelling on their part) and they left.
