A very real looking check (i.e. watermarks, etc.) was sent to me by mail in the amount of $4,350.50 attached to a letter from Comquest Research under the guise of its sponsoring a survey-oriented Mystery Shopper program (part-time employment opportunity). What ever you do, DO NOT deposit the check. It's a counterfit (a very good one) but a counterfit nonetheless. Interestingly enough, my bank actually posted the funds to my account without a hold, since the banking institution upon which the check was issued was the same as mine and given my relationship with my bank.

However, the amount is now being deducted from my account since the check is a counterfit. What a mess! I was on the phone with my bank's fraud department for over an hour trying to straighten this matter out. They are sending me a copy of the check, I will be reporting the matter to the Georgia Bureau of Investigations, local authorities and the our State's attorney general. I have also set my account up on 24/7 fraud protection but will be closing my bank account after everything clears, out of an over abundance of caution, in case my identity has been compromised.
