I've read a few reports here about Medix School, or College. Reports that came in from the United States. I have worked for Medix School in Canada and wanted to share with you my two cents from my experience there.
Medix School in itself is an institution that provides education for heath care careers, but the way they go about the business of recruiting new students is what always frustarted me working there.
Medix targets students at the very bottom of the ladder. And thats it in a nutshell. A student who wants a great career attend real schools, get trained, get a good job, have a career......any strong student doesnt go to Medix School. Medix targets down trodden students....and they do this on purpose.
The students that live in that area arent your 18-23 "ready to set the world on fire" type, they go after anyone else who doesnt fit in that criteria, and unfortuntely theres alot of them.
They choose to open schools in poor areas of cities, schools located in malls, schools location near bus terminals, schools where the potential students are most likely on welfare or social assistance, they know this, and they do it purposely. That potential student has a better chance of quaify for OSAP, or grants so thats why they choose to open schools in low end parts of the city.
Like anything else, Medix is a business first and foremost, and then a school second. The programs they offer are not going to advance any student. They make money hoping that that student who lives in those shady areas qualify for OSAP, and thats why they choose to open schools in these areas. Its a pretty simple method when you think about it. I remember being in a car driving to a conference with one of the Directors and we were in a awful place in the city, and he turned to me and said "Great place to open a campus".
Besides maybe the massage therapy program, all the programs they offer dont pay out anything. So if someone is unhappy working somewhere for $10.00 an hour, they can spend $6,000.00 to become a Personal Support Worker, take out a large OSAP loan, and become a PSW and make....$12.00 an hour...big deal.
The students can barely pass the entrance exams to get into these programs, they skim by on the actual programs, they can't get jobs when they are finished because...well...they arent qualified students, not professional. And it all goes back to the begining...they can't find work because there simply not a strong candiate.
I remember speaking with a lady that worked in the Career Services department, and remember her saying that it was so hard finding them jobs because the students for the most part are lazy, dont want to work 40 hours a week, or can't because they have kids (again expected considering the type of student they go after). The students that do find employment are fired within a month for several reasons, stealing, being late, missing days. Medix at this point doesnt really care what happens to the student, they aready have their money for tuition so not alot of focus is spent on the Career Services side of things.
I remember talking to a rep in Admissions Department, and I would ask her whats the process for a student to attend Medix. The Admissions rep laughed. Medix admission reps are trained to paint the picture of the school being a qualified career college and they student must "prove" they want to be there...that was their strategy...its the "push away" mentality of sales. When I asked what could improve the qaulity of student, she said "Look around you, the school is in a shopping mall"....and she was right...dumpy location, dumpy students....these are students that can't ever pass the basic exams to get into the simpliest programs there.
Its simply a crappy product. Inner city locations where they can go after poor people because they have a better chance to qualify for grants, that's what they are about. Every one working there, every one in every department know this...but hey its a job right...they do what everyone does when you work for someone...you go in with your fake smile and get through the day, anything to get that bi weekly pay cheque.
