United States Trademark Registration Office Deceptive Mail Marketing; an Attempt to Appear as a Government Agency Los Angeles, California

On 12/15/2011, I received a mailing in regards to a trademark filing. It indicated that I had a $375 fee, described as "NOW DUE". The letterhead bore the name: UNITED STATES TRADEMARK REGISTRATION SERVICE. The mailing was patterned to look like an official government form. Wording in the letter made reference to several other federal agencies involved in trademark enforcement. Not until the third paragraph was the true nature of the solicitation revealed; it was a service to help monitor for third party use of my already registered trademark.

This is probably not illegal. I do not know, I am not a lawyer. However, it certainly is deceptive and wanted to put it on record; firstly to inform others, secondly to establish a pattern of behavior in the event of future litigation.

If this is a service to provide information regarding potential infringing activity on a trademark, it fails to give any phone number or website that would allow the customer to assess what the nature of that information would be.
