My husband was laid off for more than 2 years. Citimortgage would not give us any help during that time even though all or other creditors did. When he went back to work, I started sending in more than the payment to help get it caught back up. They were not applying the money to our loan. They put in an account that says unapplied funds. They are making money off our money. They are charging me intrest on equity. I never even had an equity account. We paid our own home owners insurance and property taxes. They claim they paid it because they had no way of knowing if we were paying it. That is a LIE! My insurance company and my local tax office said that if we didn't pay it by law they would have to inform Citi. That never happened because we always paid it. Now they are trying to double our payment with no new contract. They have also been dragging their feet on a loan modification. We have been in the process of trying to get the loan mod. for over a year now. They keep asking for the same paperwork over and over again. I sent the paperwork every time. When I call to find out the status of things, they always say the paperwork is not new enough. I always sent the requested paperwork within 1-2 days of request. They also forced us to have an appraisal done. When I send in my payment I even started writting them notes as to where to apply the money since they can't seem to read their own payment slip. Then it still doesn't get applied to my loan, it goes into unapplied funds. I even send in money for an escrow account that I'm not supposed to have, with a note to apply it to the escrow. Again it ends up in unapplied funds. Every phone call to them is a fight. They are trying to steal our house because we have been in it a long time and they know they could sell it for double what we owe on it. Then by gov't. rule they would only have to pay us $2000.00. We would be out all the rest of the money we have paid over the years. Even after the gov't came out and said that they needed to speed up the loan mod. process, they are still dragging their feet. They keep charging us B.S. fees. This company has the worst business practices I have ever seen. They posted BILLIONS in profit last year. I seem to remember that it was us the american tax payer who bailed them out. Now they are screwing the tax payers who bailed them out by stealing our homes. They double payments with no new contract, and never even tried to do the loan mod. They give you a mortgage specialist that is supposed to help you, but all they do is stall. It's job security for them. If you want to be able to have a home loan, stay as far away from Citimortgage as you can get. I am interested in hiring an attorney to fight them, as I now feel that is the only way I will be able to resolve this situation. I would be interested in joining a class action law suit against them in the state of North Carolina.

Seems Citi-croup is taking a page out of Ocwen's playbook. Sad to see that. I'm known to skewer those looking to get out of legitimate debts, or bitching about this lender or that, but I despise the way mortgage lenders are getting away with flouting the modification programs and making life impossible for those struggling to get one done.
The incessant requests for the same paperwork and the wrongful charging for taxes and insurance already secured by the homeowners are 2 areas where I would like to see vigorous criminal prosecution of the employees directly involved in such garbage.
Add to that the misapplication of payments made by borrowers trying to at least keep close to, if not current, with what they owe.
Do what the poster consumer urged. See if you can't get some affordable, maybe pro bono, legal help, at least for consultation or sending suggestively threatening letters to the bank. As useless as the BBB probably is, squeeze whatever usefulness you can out of them. Shih-Tee-group will probably respond to their inquiries. Who knows. Maybe a complaint there will achieve something.
Involve your local state and congressional rep and request their help.

This is every bank and servicer's new nemesis, the CFPB. File a compliant on their website (see below), also file one with your state attorney general. The CFPB will want to know about your forced placed insurance situation (they just put the hammer down recently on that issue). Only send full payments to Citi util you can get some kind of payment arrangements agreed upon. Be proactive (lots of follow up) on your modification documents, there is now a law called SPOC (single point of contact), every service must now assign one to you, request a SPOC , call him/her once you send the documents "did you get in?" ; "do you need anything else?"; "when will we know about our modification?"
It's your house, you can't expect anyone to care more about it then you (not saying you don't, but you get the point).
