First I would like to say I am very disappointed that the Kool family failed to consult with or advise me that they were going to use an email my wife sent to them and neglected to share the truth. I discovered this post coincidentally today while looking for a Malamute for a buddy, otherwise I would have responded sooner. I am the current owner of Wakey and we adopted her in May 2011. We picked her up at the Kool compound in May and she was wet and matted. She did not want to get into the car as well (I know why now).

They did advise us she was wet and would have to be brushed. We got her home and were able to the best brushing we could at the time (new environment/timid).  At her new home she was very timid and would run away for myself and my wife. She did not eat anything the first night and would not come in the house. The second day she ate like she had been starving (went through two and a half bowls). We noticed that she had been chewing at her front left paw as well.  Her coat was very thick so we could not see through the dense fur.

The following weeks when she did eat food, it was evident that she did not get enough food. She would rush to the food in a hurry and guard it. We separated the bowls and she would still try to eat my other dog's food. I could see the pack mentality in this, seemed she had to get to the food before anyone else or she wouldn't get any. We were able to get her into the vets later that month on May 23rd, 2011 (roughly two weeks after adoption). We advised the vet of the gnawing on the paw and he stated he could not determine the true cause until she was groomed and she was other wise healthy (he did too notice she had a slight HD).

Hence the email the Kool's posted from my wife. On June 10th we were able to get her to the groomers and that is where the horrid discovery occurred. When the groomer was starting to trim around Wakey's neck she smelled a rotting smell and discovered sores. She called us and told us to take Wakey to the vet immediately. Wakey had an awful skin infection. The vet believed it was an existing issue that progressively got worse due to the heat and humidity. The vet stated they believe the primary cause was all of her mats in her coat which prevented the air from circulating under the fur.

The vet said if we would have waited any longer (a few days to a week) she probably would've contracted maggots and died. When we received her from the Kool's we were informed she was bathed, healthy (minus slight HD), and all set. We forked out hundreds of dollars in expenses (vet and groomer) to get her healthy. The Kool family offered us $50 or we could return her. I would never return Wakey to that neglect. I believe the Kool family operation has gotten too large for themselves to handle and that is why this neglect is occurring.

It is a shame that my wife, my other dog (whom I purchased from the Kool family in 2005 when they were a smaller operation), and myself are the only ones who stuck it out with Wakey. She is healthy and sociable now. I completely disagree with the Amos family or "Susan" that she couldn't be saved and needed to be returned to her environment. You gave up on her and took the easy way out. It is tragic that no one else would put in the time with this dog. It was trying, but it could be done and was. Kool family you need to stop with the lies and may be scale back your operation.

I have three dogs from Kool Alaskan Malamutes. All of them have been well-socialized, well-cared for and very healthy. They have all been vet checked annually for different disorders that usually effect malamutes, and nothing negative has ever come back (the oldest dog we have from them is almost 6 and the youngest 2). Each time we've adopted a puppy, we've been allowed access to their property and it is very easy to see how well-kept and down right spoiled all of their dogs are. Whenever we communicate with them, they not only remember the puppies we've adopted, but they remember the names we have chosen for them and how long we've had them. These are good, down-to-earth breeders with a lot of sense. We adopted our first dog from them in '06 and will continue to adopt puppies from them and recommend them to everyone and anyone out there. I do not understand how anyone could say these dogs are anything but loved and well-cared for. You only have to look at the pictures on their website to see it. Everything is very clean, spacious and very mindful towards the dogs' safety and happiness. It's just disappointing to read so much slander against very good breeders.

Sorry it took a few days to reply back but I we took Wakey to the vet today so I wanted to wait until after that. Doctor said she is completely healthy and her stool sample was negative, which we were happy to hear. She takes her glucosamine chondroitin extremely well too for us. She was at first timid with us and hid in the backyard, we couldnt even get her into the house! But after the first day, each day after she warmed up to us. Very quickly too, I might add, so by the end of the week, she was a whole new dog! We got her into the house by the end of that week and now she hardly wants to go outside!!! She developed a tendency to smack the door with her paw to let us know she was waiting by it to come inside and then shes howls until we come. It was really funny tho my fiancee didnt think so when she was doing it at 4am so we are currently trying to break her of that habit.
Speaking of my fiancee, Wakey absolutely adores him. Literally follows him from room to room wanting to always be near him and for him to be petting her. If he is up stairs or in the basement, Wakey will continuously go and check on him and she even licks him a lot. Which surprised me. She is a doll and definitely has a personality of her own. She likes to shake her mane of a hair and make like a barking noise that honestly sounds like a horse sometimes. She is the funniest character and we both really love her a lot. Biloxi and her at first ignored each other but now they seem to be good friends. She follows him around the yard a lot and the other morning we saw them playing and jumping on each other. It was really great to see how fast and close they are getting.We definitely are more than happy that we adopted such a great dog and are looking forward to some great years with her. We are trying to lease train her so we can get her to go on walks with us and trying to teach her how to play ball too.

Kool Alaskan Malamutes:  What a wonderful place to buy a puppy and adult Alaskan Malamute!

Hope Ambos's report is full of many lies.  Please email us at (((Redacted)))for references from many happy customers.  Hope Ambos appears to be talking to those that are responsible for writing the other ripoff reports against us that appear to have been instigated by the well-known TN Alaskan Malamute breeder.  More on this story when we have time to type it out.

1. Vet xrays of Wakey at Kool show ball & socket deformity, which explains why the dog fell down quite a lot, especially going up and down stairs, slipping as the hip gave way. Hip Dysplasia in mild form does not show up with said physical conditon.

2. Age has nothing to do with training, handling, and having a young malamute, if the malamute has been well socialized, and the owners are well versed, and experienced in training dogs, and have had malamutes in the past. A well socialized dog, even a malamute, known for being strong willed, can become quite well behaved, and exhibit even show dog qualities, if given the proper environment, and training, which includes, letting the dog know who the alpha leader is....

3. Unsocialized malamutes would present a problem to anyone, young or old. Just ask the many people who have gotten dogs in such condition. Sooner they would abuse them, if they did not know that it was not the dogs fault, but rather that of the breeder, who would allow a dog to be sold as a pet/companion, and not telling the prospective buyers, that the dogs are in fact NOT SOCIALIZED, and would need special training by a professional, which most pet owners, are not.

4. The dog Kool's call Wakey, was beautiful, ONLY AFTER WE SPENT TIME ON HER COAT, HER TEMPERMENT, HER OBEDIENCE, AND HER EXCELLENT VET CARE .She did arrive in a condition stated by a neighbor passing by, as a dog that had been NEGLECTED. 

5. The Professional Behaviorist, did in fact state to us that we should return the dog, NOT DUE TO OUR AGE, OR LACK OF ABILITY TO HANDLE A DOG, SINCE WE JUST LOST OUR 12 YEAR OLD MALAMUTE TO CANCER, BUT BECAUSE WE HAD A DOG THAT WAS TOTALLY UNSOCIALIZED WHICH COULD CREATE A THREAT TO US AND OUR HOME, OR VISITORS, AS THERE IS NO WAY TO GO BACK AND CORRECT THE DAMAGE DONE BY NOT SOCIALIZING THE DOG AS A PUPPY.

6. THE IMPRENTING WINDOW OF TIME HAD PASSED FOR THIS DOG.

7. THERE HAVE BEEN  CALLS MADE TO US FROM OTHERS, AND E-MAILS WHO HAVE HAD VERY BAD EXPERIENCES WITH DOGS PURCHASED FROM KOOL ALASKAN MALAMUTES, AND THEY HAVE BEEN VERY SYMPATHIC TO WHAT WE HAVE BEEN THROUGH. i SUPPOSE THERE ARE ALOT MORE OUT THERE. cERTAINLY WE ALL CAN'T BE WRONG IN OUR STORIES. Sadly, the stories are very similiar, the dogs behaviors are very similiar....I could say, "Where there is smoke, there is fire"...We are only one of many I suppose, but we stand on the truth of our story, as we know it...."With age comes wisdom, but sometimes age comes alone"... We now bring wisdom with us, in our quest for the beloved alaskan malamute, that will once again woo woo with us.

8. We are well able to handle a dog that has been socialized. We actually have a rescue yorkie/poo and a rabbit... We do know how to introduce OUR PACK , to new members.  IT HAS ALWAYS WORKED FOR US, AND IT WILL CONTINUE.

9. Malamutes being sold for financial gain only, compromise greatly the breed standard, and all that a malamute is...We feel sorry for those breeders out there who really care about the malamute, and want to see people have a wonderful experience with them...

10. We will continue in our efforts to tell the truth always about the condition of any dog we get from any breeder that is less than what was advertised. We had the xrays done, not Kool Alaskan Malamutes.  We know what condition the hip is in that Wakey has.. Proof is right there. The xrays were to be returned to our vet, by Pat Kool. Anyone wanting to know the truth, to see the evidence, we have photographs of the dog Wakey, the day of arrival, and subsequent photo's.There were phone calls made to the Kools, to the Kools vet, by me in an effort to collect any information as to why the dog arrived in the condition it was in. Also the neighbor spoke to Jim Kool, as did the Professional Behaviorist when she was here to make the evaluation.

11. If Wakey is sold, after Kool being made aware of the behaviorist report, the xrays, the documentated behavior of her high anxiety, and destruction due to that, it would be morally wrong, not just as a breeder, but as a human being. This dog, should live out her life, the only way she ever knew it, since the imprenting window of time was ignored. She can be sweet, but she also can be very aggressive, as told to us by the kennel where she stayed. One will never be able to trust what triggers her.... That is the truth as we know it.

12 He who hides nothing, has nothing to hide. Anyone who wants to know the truth is welcome. Kool Alaskan Malamutes advertises that their dogs are socialized.  My question IS SOCIALIZED TO WHAT, AND BY WHOSE STANDARDS..PERHAPS WE SHOULD REDEFINE THE WORD SOCIALIZED.

WAKEY IS NOT A PET/COMPANION ...SHE IS AN UNSOCIALIZED PACK RAISED MALAMUTE. MAKE SURE YOU ALL KNOW THAT NO MATTER THE AGE OF A PERSON, A PACK RAISED DOG SHOULD BE HANDLED ONLY BY PROFESSIONAL TRAINERS. NOT JUST A FAMILY WANTING A DOG TO LOVE. We want WAKEY TO HAVE A GOOD HOME, WITH SOMEONE WHO UNDERSTANDS HOW TREACHEROUS IT CAN BE TO HAVE A DOG THAT HAS NOT BEEN SOCIALIZED. IT IS OUR DESIRE THAT A PROFESSIONAL TRAINER TAKE A LOOK AT HER, BUT SHE WOULD NOT FIT IN A HOME WHERE PEOPLE DO NOT UNDERSTAND THE BREED OF A MALAMUTE, AND ESPECIALLY AN UNSOCIALIZED ONE..

Kool Alaskan Malamutes (Wakey) sold to Ambos advertised Stunning & Beautiful,, Arrrived having been shaved with clippers, to hide matted fur, that was as foul smelling as a skunk spray.   Totally UNSOCALIZED.. Fearful of human contact, being in a house, high anxiety, and obvious to canine lovers, that this dog had been very neglected. We were advised that she had slight hip dysplasia, without benefit of an xray from the breeders vet. We had that done, and the condition was more serious. She had a sloppy hip joint. She fell up and down stairs, and her gaite was unsteady. It was apparent from the begining that this dog needed professional attention, so a canine behaviorist was called in. This particular canine behaviorist was well credentialled, and had much experience in the field of her endeavor.  She reported that this dog was a PACK RAISED DOG.  Due to lack of socalization of this dog from the imprenting window of 4 weeks to 12 weeks, she behaved as a wild pack dog, filled with anxiety, stress, and great fear at everything in her new environment.... We were advised after having much destruction done by her, in our home, when we would leave, that we were actually living in "the perfect storm", ie: the outcome for the dog, or us, would not be good.....The report also stated that this dog would be a big challenge for ANYONE.  Regardless of age, size, or instruction, this dog would ALWAYS be a challenge. Not recommended that she be placed in any home, but rather returned back to the breeder, and pack.

There is quite enough documentation to support the decision to return the dog to the breeder. The emotional trauma to the dog, and to this family has been sinful, to say the least, not to mention the added expense of vet bills, boarding fees, so we could leave our home to do our errands.

By the time this dog had to leave, we had laid a great foundation of good health, good care, love, affection and some training, in spite of her pack raised temperment, which we were advised would be most uncertain throughout her life.

People,this is totally an unacceptable practice to pack raise dogs, and advertise them as pets/companions, and part of a family. Socalization with other pack dogs, hardly is representative of the description we know as "having a socalized dog". Kool advertises their dogs as socalized, however, they are not, at least the one we got. They are sold under the auspices of beautiful, stunning, cute,  large malamutes, biggest, best, SOCALIZED, on and on.  There is no truth in the socalization....

The emotional turmoil that took place over a period of months, not only for us, but the dog is unlike anything we have ever experienced..

Anyone out there read "Man's inhumanity to Man"? Perhaps the script could be written about the precious canine's that suffer unnecessarily at the hand of breeders that avoid direct questions, spin the truth to suit them, and more importantly prey on kind people and the most gentle breed of dogs, the alaskan malamute. Kool Alaskan Malamutes and others like them, could take a longer look at the way a great breeder does business, and learn that often in life Less is More. It's all about quality, not quantity.....How many more stories out there are like ours.... Many.... We still miss that "furkid", we still cry, we still long to have her with us, and she would be, had the proper training, love , care, and interest in the breed, and people been there, when she was  born, instead of puting her in a dog house with her lactating mother and siblings, and little contact with human beings.

We are reporting our story as individuals that have had no affilation with any other breeder regarding the practices of the Kool Alaskan Malamutes. This is our story. It is a very heartfelt sad story, one I trust will be put to the public, to warn those looking for those precious malamutes... Do your homework. check the list of what makes for a reputable breeder... If they are evasive, turn, run, and don't look back, no matter how attractive that web photo is... What you see on the web, is not always what will show up in your front yard.  BUYER BEWARE.. MAKE INQUIRIES..LOOK VERY CLOSELY AT THE DOGS ON THE SITE.

Art and Hope no longer own Wakey, she is back at Kools. Let's all hope we can be wiser when it comes to our choices, when selecting a family pet/compaion.
