I read everything on here prior to purchasing a Magic Jack - but I also read the info on Magic Jack's site, their FAQ's and terms of service quite clearly explain & define almost everything people have complained about!  Maybe if those folks had researched the product instead of whining, they'd be happier.

I went ahead & bought since I found very few complaints that seemed legitimate.  After 3 months, the company has done exactly as promised & it has performed as well if not better than expected. Not a miracle, just a product that's well worth the price, in my opinion.

If you're considering buying one, be intelligent enough to read the info first & don't complain if they do what they promised. And like any software or online product, don't just click every "OK" button that pops up, READ what you're agreeing to!!

Again, read the info

That's a good example of exactly what I was trying to explain!  MJ's website very clearly explains that the 30-day free trial is for CREDIT CARDS ONLY and does not apply if a DEBIT card is used, also explains why in depth, AND explains that what appears to be a 2nd charge MAY appear temporarily.  These explanations were all there long ago when I was checking into it.

But folks don't want to read info up front, and apparently many have no idea that debit & credit cards are not the same thing.

By the way, no - I'm not affiliated with MJ, just a consumer that's sick of people bad-mouthing companies that actually DO what they promise!

I've had mine for almost 9 months & use it daily with no problems. It's been the BEST product I've purchased in a long while.

Free 30 day trial only costs $46.90

AUTHOR: Jeanne - (USA)

POSTED: Monday, August 16, 2010

We are supposed to get a "free" 30 day trial, and our card was charged the same day.  The Magic Jack has been returned to them today after wasting 4 hours with it.  They gave us until August 30th to return it, even though we received it on the 15th.  Hmmm, seems like our "free" 30 day trial really cost $46.90 and is really just 2 weeks....

This is a copy-paste from the BBB:

On April 15, 2009 Attorney General Bill McCollum announced that his Economic Crimes Division has reached a settlement with a Palm Beach County business over allegations the company marketed a 'free' 30-day trial for its long distance phone equipment, but actually charged and debited consumers during the trial. MagicJack, LP markets MagicJack a phone service product which connects a household phone to a computer, allowing consumers to make unlimited long distance calls over the internet. The investigation into the company's practices began in July 2008 after the Attorney General's Office received numerous complaints about the supposed 'free' trial. Consumers reported that although the company advertised the 30-day free trial offer, customers were allegedly still being billed during the trial period. The investigation further determined that the product had limitations which were not properly disclosed and that the company had a lack of sufficient customer service to address consumer complaints. As part of the settlement, the company has agreed to implement various new practices to assist its customers, including a guarantee that all inquires will be responded to within 24 business hours and a disclaimer on the first page of its website clarifying the eligibility requirements to participate in a free trial offer. The company will also reimburse the state for the costs associated with the investigation and has fully resolved over 500 customer complaints. MagicJack, LP cooperated fully with the Attorney General's investigation and has resolved over 500 consumer complaints since the investigation began.

I like Magic Jack, not for a daily phone service

AUTHOR: JayJay - (United States of America)

POSTED: Saturday, August 14, 2010

I bought Magic Jack at least 4 yrs ago.  It dosn't work all that great as a phone, but guess what, it's a great voice mail service, you can forward your calls to your cell phone.  I also keep Magic Jack, because I tend to change my cell phone no. about once a yr.  That way friends and family can always contact me, because I forward all my calls from my Magic Jack to my cell phone.

Another good thing about it, you can give this no. to your creditors, that way they don't have your cell no, but if needed they can always reach you, or leave only a voice mail.  lol

They have never over charged my account, nor has it ever affected my computer.

Now Juniper Jack?  lol different story!

I'm going to have to agree with you...  It is complete laziness on the behalf of these people...

I mean, come on,  its a VoIP internet phone, of course you need your computer running with an internet connection...

I am also a happy Magic Jack customer with no complaints....

Good Luck Ed-

I had this worthless product for nearly 3 years when they first came out and I was online constantly trying to get a good phone line working. This device needs your computer running to work and any big downloads or extra traffic will cause phone interference. This product does not work as said and most customers are very sorry they ever got it. Save your money and get Ooma-free calls-no monthly bills ever! Just buy the phone box from Walmart, Cosco, or many other places and enjoy crystal clear calls anywhere in the US and Canada and never see any bill. I've had it for 2 years and have never needed to contact tech support for anything. It works perfect. Go to Ooma.com to see the video.
