I received a letter from CPA L.P. for my daughter's ComCast account while she was living in AL. She moved to Ohio in May and closed her account with ComCast. On July 24 2009 she contacted ComCast via a Web Form Submission to have them grant access to her closed account so she could see the balance and pay it. They replied (via E-mail - I have a copy) that she could contact an analyst via an oonline chat session. She opened a chat session on August 12, 2009 to see what the final balance would be. She was told by the analyst (Ruby) that ComCast had written off the $16.24 and that her balance was zero at this time. I have a copy of that chat session. Since receiving the threatening letter, I contacted ComCast on Oct 31, 2009 on my daughter's behalf. They once again confirmed that she did not owe anything at that her account balance was zero. I tried to contact CPA L.P. but ran into the same issue as others (that I found via web searches). When you call the number it leaves you in a loop of options that does not allow you to talk to a "live" person. Based on research (and complaints) on this company. I am writing my report early so I can document and continue to document the harassment I am sure is to come.

Charge Off..

Comcast was correct once they "charge-off" your daughter's account your daughter no longer owed anything to Comcast. However, that does not mean that the debt goes away. Companies do not keep bad debt on their books forever, in fact it is actually illegal in most cases for them to do this. So what they(and other companies do) is to "charge-off" and sell the debt to other agencies. In this case it appears to be CPA L.P, which I believe is a Collection Agency.
It appears that your daughter knew she owed a bill, but waited(for what ever reason) too long to try and pay it. So the chances are that the debt owed to the collection agency is valid, depending on what they say she now owes.
If this is a collection agency you DO NOT want to talk to them over the phone. You should always contact them through certified mail. This way you have a paper trail of what was said and promised. Once you get from them what is owed and you can agree with it, you should only offer to pay them through a Money Order. The key is to not give them access to any of your bank accounts. Also, make sure you get it in writing that your payment(s) would then have the account considered paid in full where no other action would be taken.
