I paid $1000 for a directory membership and was promised two free airtickets. Their contract says membership is non cancellable. Even if the networking was suspect, two airtickets sans restrictions for anywhere in the US debatably costs $1000. So it did not seem too much to ponder about. One does not do this for vanity, as someone mentioned, but for networking/advertising opportunities.

The Stanfords directory it turns out, has very bad press for ripping off customers and has no circulation of repute. Their BBB rating is F and have numerous online complaint reports against them where it will actually hurt a member to be a part of a dubious and shady group.

They sent me a buy one ticket at full price get one free from some travel club instead. I have returned all their material to then and have not used their memership. I received no free air tickets. As a remediation, they offered to refund half my money and provide some travel club vouchers for free airfare provided I pay some undisclosed amount for hotel stays and membership. This was not part of their contract. I refused to accept it. Am waiting for a settlement from my credit card but this fraudulent merchant is trying to delay the settlement asking for arbitration.

I am looking for more people and a law firm so I can start a class action against these crooks. Most stores will take back merchandise if it was not as promised when you open the box but never used it. A merchant will not oblige if they never intends to get repeat business and wanted to run with your money.
